This is a pretty good chess set for someone who wants something a little nicer than the sort you get from a department store with a cardboard board and plastic pieces. There's just something about the way metal pieces look, the way light reflects off them and details stand out. Plastic just isn't the same. And they feel solid and have a certain heft when held.The case has hard foam inside with cutouts for the pieces, and they are held tightly in place, so no chance of any of them coming loose and banging around or getting dinged. It's made of solid wood with some kind of lacquer finish, very smooth and a little shiny. I think most chess players who would like a high quality set that doesn't cost a small fortune would enjoy this set.

It looks nice. I guess quality control missed the fact a knight was not fully coated the correct color. Very annoying! If not for the cost, maybe a 3 star. And do you really need 2 queens per side?

This Chess set has elegant metal pieces and a wooden folding board. The Chess pieces have a classic design and are about mid-sized with the King being about 3" tall. The pieces have a nice finish with great detail. They are also weighted with felt bottoms and feel great to play with. However, the play area is too small being a little less than 11" x 11" with 1 3/8" squares. The wooden folding board looks gorgeous with its choice of wood colors and the large outside trim. There is padded storage for the pieces inside the board, which would make it great for travel. Unfortunately, the wooden board is noticeably thin and does feel not durable. I'm split on this Chess set. On one hand, the Chess pieces are excellent quality, but the board's play area is too small and feels thin and cheap. I would maybe recommend it as a travel Chess set, but it's not something I would use too much at home.

So... the value here I think is the metal chess pieces. Pretty nicely detailed (especially at this price) and a solid heft to them that feels great in the hand and moving around the board. As others have pointed out, the board itself is a bit on the cheaper side. Likely due to using softer/less expensive woods available in the area it's manufactured in.I debated a bit between 4-5 stars and came to this conclusion... for the money you're getting some really nice chess pieces and it is pitched as a travel board. To me a travel board tends to be on the thinner/lighter side and you don't really expect the heft and solid feel you'd get from thick hardwood boards. So, between that and the excellent chess pieces I still say it's a 5 star product that's worth the money.
