Looks delicate but quite sturdy
I've been a regular hammock sleeper for years; switched from a bed because hammocks give me better joint support during a night's sleep and avoid a lot of my arthritis waking pain and stiffness in the morning. I weigh about 205 pounds.I live in a hot, Mojave Desert city and was looking for good mesh-type hammock for the scorching summer months. Hammocks are already cooler than beds but I was wanting greater surface exposure to air circulation so I could even turn off the A/C at night and get by with a fan and the Novice Cotton Mayan does exactly that. You are essentially suspended in air in a fine mesh net and you can put a fan on yourself above, below, or laterally at any angle. When I first opened it up, I was skeptical since it looks essential like a large piece of lace, the strings that comprise it look like twine you used to use to tie up and mail a package. I set it up immediately and climbed in and it very easily handled my 200+ lbs.Been using it for a week prior to writing this review and it's been fine. I usually toss and turn 3-5 times before falling asleep and it handles constant movement deftly and comfortably. It feels soft, but when body weight is in it, the webbing becomes firm and taut. Since the strength comes from spreading load over many threads, I think users need to be careful not to put too much stress on too few strings as you might when pressing down with your hands to exit the hammock.Hammocks hold you in one position so if you sleep with your bare skin next to the hammock surface for a full night, it will tend to give you "waffle" flesh where you contact the strings. If you're young it's not a problem, but if you're an old codger like me, it takes a while before my skin looks normal. If you like the feel of cotton this will be fine. The threads are like mercurized cotton so when you're in it, it feels more like laying on a textured bedspread rather than like being on a sweater. You can find synthetic mesh hammocks from sporting goods specialty vendors, but I thought this looked promising for 100% indoor, domestic household use. I am not disappointed.Only time will tell how many summers' use I will get out of this, but so far it's met my needs.
