East meets West in this Studio Gonzo classic.
A new law has been passed in Tokyo. People are now allowed to carry guns at all times, and they're even allowed to use them. As expected crime has increased and the arrest rate has gone down. This is all thanks to the corrupt armed police force known as RAPTBurst angel follows Jo and her all female group of mercenaries who undergo dangerous missions to try and maintain some order in the chaos. These impossibly proportioned girls do battle with terrorists a plenty with their incredible arsenal of gigantic guns and powerful giant armoured suits. For the first half of this 24 part series the characters and themes are introduced through a series of two part episodes. These episodes are really enjoyable to watch as they are filled with plenty of OTT action, great comedy and fanservice. Later on, the story sticks to a story arc and becomes a bit more serious and I must admit that it does drag in places. The characters are probably the best thing about this anime because they are all really likeable in their own way.Ditsy cowgirl wannabe Meg is the stereotypical damsel in distress for most episodes and main protagonist Jo is a hardened mercenary with a mysterious hidden past who prefers to speak with actions rather than words. All characters are each portrayed nicely by their respected voice actors. Some of which include Monica Rial (Najica, Excel Saga) and Greg Ayes (Beck, Gantz, The Wallflower). The animation is also really good; created by acclaimed studio Gonzo. (Gantz, Afro Samurai, Full Metal Panic) There is plenty of nice vibrant art work with some clean looking fight scenes. Furthermore, the several mecha battles found here are rendered with breathtaking use of CGI.The music is a joy to listen to as it is a mix between spaghetti western and typical japanese pop. The ending credits theme song is a particularly catchy song.Burst Angel is a classic anime that will appeal to a wide variety of anime fans, and if you enjoy this, then you will pleased to know that there is a short OVA (original video animation) out now, entitled Burst Angel Infinity. Thanks for reading!!!

Boring, paper thin
i really tried hard to like burst angel but i found it all a bit dull and boring the characters where paper thin and so was the story. There is plenty of action but for some reason it did'nt draw me in to liking it. For the Price get something better but for 5 to 7 pounds i woulld buy this as this is were i see its value for money but i'd advise paying no more.

the ride is pretty good and I suppose it gives me a chance ...
It has that classic problem a lot of anime suffers from, in that it doesn't have a proper ending! I almost put my foot through the screen when I watched it! Regardless, the ride is pretty good and I suppose it gives me a chance to exercise my imagination. Yes, I'm sure everything works out in the end...

A mixed bag...
Just to clarify from the outset, I already bought all the volumes of this series individually (including the ova) back when they were first released; so, this isn't so much a commentery on this boxset but more on the anime itself...First, a brief synopsis on the series. Set in a dystopian future, Burst Angel charts the exploits of a group of female mercenaries - the titular "Angels".. Their members are Jo, a trigger-happy amnesiac; Meg, a cute but inept cowgirl who serves as Jo's partner; Sei, the team's beautiful leader; & Amy, a pre-teen prodigy who's an expert computer hacker. Also worth mentioning (just barely) is Kyohei, a young chef-in-training who the team hires as their cook...I won't go into any great detail about the plot itself; like the other reviewers have already said, it's pretty thin & formulaic stuff.. Basically it involves goverment conspiracys; corrupt police forces; sinister experiments.. The usual stuff, really! Now, as the title of this review suggests, my feelings toward this anime were.. Mixed, to say the least. On the one hand, it has all the right ingredients to make a great series - beautiful girls; awesome mecha; tons of action. Burst Angel has it all. Sadly, the way it's executed will likely leave most viewers feeling a bit.. Unfulfilled, let's say. That's not to say it's bad necessarily; it just feels like the series fails to ever live up to it's full potential...Take the cast for example; sure, the girls certainly look good, but in terms of their personalities they're a pretty bland & uninteresting bunch.. Jo rarely displays any emotion except when she's fighting; Meg trys to act as moral support but tends to come off as somewhat irritating.. Sei is relatively inoffensive(& hot!), but spends most of her time working behind the scenes rather than getting hands-on with the missions. For me, Amy is probably the most charismatic of the four; sure, she can be a conniving brat at times.. But she's so insufferably cute you can't help but like her!(Sadly, she doesn't get nearly enough screen time..)Kyohei, however, deserves special mention for being arguably one of the most pointless characters in anime history! He contributes nothing whatsoever to the overall plot, & is so excruciatingly wimpy you just want to slap him!(He probably has more X chromosomes than the rest of the cast put together..)The faults don't stop there unfortunatly.. Not only does the series fall short in terms of story, but even the action seems sub-standard; the CG mechs look impressive, but appear all too briefly. Battles seem far too short. Footage from previous episodes is often re-used.. All-in-all, the whole thing feels very half-hearted..(Or half-baked, depending how you look at it)Now, I know this all probably sounds very negative.. But, funny thing is, despite all it's flaws, Burst Angel STILL manages to be entertaining! Sure, it's not the sort of title you're likely to watch again & again; sure, it does nothing that hasn't already been done before..(& done better!)BUT! Despite all that, I still managed to enjoy it. A guilty pleasure perhaps.. But a pleasure all the same. So, to sum up; if you're scraping the barrel looking for your next anime fix, and are in the mood for something that features both cute girls & big ass robots duking it out, give this a whirl. It won't stay with you long after you've watched it, sure, but so long as you keep your expectations low & just enjoy it for the brainless fun it is, I'm sure casual viewers won't come away too disappointed...That's my two cents worth anyway!!
