it works
I had purchased an Ames shovel at a hardware store so I knew the quality was probably good. I have 2 acres and I groom and mow about 1/2 acre in Oregon. I have had it for about a week now and have pulled hundreds of weeds. The thing to understand about this tool is that the more accurately you can locate the exact center of the weed, the more likely you will get it out on the first attempt. I can testify that in normal soil, once you have enough practice finding the center of the weed, I can pull out a weed every 5 seconds. It isn't always necessary to push it down with the foot. Usually, the weed comes out with less ground penetration. It is fun to use, oddly satisfying. One other note: If the soil is rocky, it can be frustrating because a rock can wedge itself into the "twist" part of the contraption. I can't imagine anyone not finding this tool useful.

Sturdy and Functional
The tool works well and seems much more sturdy and solidly built than other similar weeding tools. It goes into the soil easily and seems to get to the root. Like all similar tools it can be prone to the soil and weed getting stuck and requires manual removal on occasion. Overall I’ve been happy with the purchase.

great idea
very easy to use, given the ground is soft or has been wet. i will have to try it in the summer.very good idea, an ease to use. yet!! if you go too deep, the clot ( clump of dirt that come up with the weed ) is hard to push out. and too, it leaves a hole in the ground. where you have just removed the weed. i am not fond of that! yet it does work. and a bit more ease than being on ones knees.guess i'll keep it! and for what it does! the price is ok too. got it on timethanks

Device is innovative, but quality is lacking in handle, warranty service is slow during peak season
Quick version... would I buy again, yes, because of the 15yr warranty and unique design but there are caveats not everyone will like and some things I think they could improve to increase durability. If you work within the its limitations you will love this tool and have it for years.Out of my two uses, there was tons of potential in this weeder over other market options but lots of nuances you should take into account. 1, weed only on wet/damp or loose soils preferably after a rain or irrigation drench. This will prolong the life of your tool. I can't and won't use this on my hard clay mixed soil without the ground being moist as it would jam up the ejection and defeat the ease of use. 2, very loose soils (fresh tilling areas or new fertilizer) will not hold in the unit enough to raise and eject all the time (didn't find this to be a huge issue). 3, handle is plastic but is the sole main mechanism to turn the bore tip in the ground. Once again if you do this on hard soil you will possibly damage your device and shred your handle as other reviewers have shown. 4, weeds next to concrete will be hard to get at and I would not risk hitting concrete with this. The foot pedal base will pivot so you can get very close but you risk some damage if you are too close since it is still wider than the bore tip and the bore can still break. I chose to not attempt it after seeing the logistical placement issues and other reviewer's broken bore tip tines. 5, which might sound obviously but this will not be effective in rock beds, rocky driveways, or heavy mulch/nuggets without clearing a path to the ground first. I personally like to chem areas away from plants and trees in these areas instead anyway to expedite things. Also of note, my product arrived a bit defective, the rivet on the handle looked to be stamped incorrectly and off center in the hole causing it to not set. I used it twice and what was left of said rivet fell off. I stopped using the weeder to contact Ames about the issue. As most others have pointed out, the handle being plastic also sets back an otherwise unique feat of engineering here. If this handle was metal and screwed on instead of held on by a rivet there would be no competition for it in the market today, hands down. Figuring that mine was a rivet defect I reached out to Ames (a company I buy from frequently) because it has a 15 year warranty which they agreed to honor (which is why I love Ames, they will back their items). However, the turnaround is listed at a maximum of 4 weeks for just the decision on an warranty claim when you submit, and that does not count replacement timing (usually an additional 1-2 months on top in my experience). I was going on week 6 with a case number open and Amazon return window closed but they did still get back to me thankfully. They are often overwhelmed with claims during peak lawn and garden season, but they will get to you. Remember to keep copies of all product labels and all receipts to show them. Sometimes you need to reach out more than a few times to the email they send when your case is opened. I wish this would be faster, but they have not let me down yet except they do have the occasional back order or discontinued part for older units. To be fair, this is a better process for warranty than other companies I have dealt with so I like going back to Ames.Note, this above statement is solely my personal opinion and is not made to represent any facts.

Effortless
Super quick and easy to use... If it fails to pull the weed fully out just rotate it a couple more times on others before you go to pull them out... My lawn looked like a land mine hit it after I pulled out everything that wasn't the main grass, but after a couple weeks it fills back in and the wholes are great for airating the lawn... Even clumps of crab grass if you center it it pulls out the whole chunk... I show this off to everyone that stops by saying they need one on their lives...

Broke after FIRST use!
"A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link." That is exemplified in this tool. The bottom part of this thing is VERY sturdy. It feels like it could last for ten years. But, the handle is made of plastic and is attached to the bottom part with a thin piece of plastic attached with a screw. It did a great job for the hour I used it in my front and back yard. Then, the handle broke off at the point that the screw through the thin plastic. The next one I bought didn't have a nice a mechanism, but the handle is welded metal.
