Does the job but was welded crooked
I am using this to bend Docol R8 tube. While the die fits well in my Woodward bender, the neck that sticks out from the die and holds the tube collar/tightening screw was welded on very crooked. This means that the tightening screw that jams into the tube to hold it tight in the collar does not intersect the tube through the horizontal center line of the tube. This leaves a larger indention in the tube and doesn't hold it as tight on initial start of the bend. As such I get about 0.1" of movement in the tube until about 5° of bend because the tube is being pulled to center on the die and the tightening screw is not centered. Once I figured this out however, I was able to change my technique. I have to continuously tighten the screw until the noted bend angle at which point you can feel the screw won't become loose as you continue your bend and adjust the tube position in the die to account for the tube movement. The dies themselves work for bending. I do wish the follower die had more of an entry chamfer to it as I get some minor material scuffing on the tube itself. I am also using Baleigh bending lube to try to mitigate the scuffing which seems to be helping. The adjustable air nozzle turned degree indicator was useless. It moved so much with the littlest bump, I frequently lost my place during test bends. I recommend using a wire hanger to make a new degree indicator that is more stable.EDIT: changed the rating to 1 star because the die broke. I built the one cage with this, and bent maybe 3 tubes at various other times. Last time I heard a cracking noise and eventually noticed that the retaining pin was pulling through the side of the die on the first hole. The base metal cracked right where the weld is. There is not enough material on the first retaining hole and it fatigued and failed. I was bending the same Docol tube which is similar to 4130. Won't be buying this again. 1 cage worth of a bending is not worth the price. I've attached pictures of the crack. It goes all the way through into the pin hole.
