An Excellent Reboot Of Dan Dare For The Audio Age.
Like many men of my age, I am a fan of Dan Dare. The best way to read him is to buy one of the various reprints of the comics in book form whether they be Dragons Dream imprint or the later full sized ones by Hawk. Dan Dare Pilot of the Future But I also love audiobooks.I bought Dan Dare's Voyage to Venus, Dan Dare: Voyage to Venus, Volume 1 It really is excellent and follows the book story well and intelligently. So when the triple adventures came out with the two extra stories I took a punt and ordered it.The question was would it be as good as the original. The short answer is no. The former is the better because it is more detailed and twice as long as the hour-long version we have here.BUT all three of these adventures really are special. The authors have cut the stories, used them as a framework and rewrote them.Purist may not like the updated stories but I really like them.Let me explain. The new authors think that the 1950's attitudes such as class, attitudes towards women and the stiff British Upper lip are old fashioned and 'alien' to the modern reader.Their audience has moved. The older Dan Dare fans get smaller in numbers each year and the new 'readers/listeners' would not appreciate the dated attitudes. The result is that Digby is more than an equal to dan in attitude and intelligence. The 'Lancashire Hotpot' working class 'tip your hat to tha' upper class toffs' has gone.Digby was always an equal to Dan as a Pilot but this set of adventures has Digby as being as astute as Dan Dare and, this surprised me, more of an action figure than Dan. Digby is older has seen it all before, gone around the block a lot more and is wiser than the Space Boy pilot Cover Boy Dan.Add to the mix that professor Peabody is Dan's equal action wise and there is no chance of her slipping and twisting her ankle nor screaming and being paralysed with fright at the sight of an alien or the alien's blood red or any other colour. Peabody is more than Dan's equal. For me this makes the stories new, interesting and the important bit entertaining. The authors have done a good rewrite, remake, remodel job.Now this won't please everyone but my goodness it does please me.Let's face it the best way to enjoy Dab Dare is to read the comic strips. This is, to borrow Frank Zappa's phrase' a movie for your ears and is completely different. The actors and writers have done a great job to 'reboot' Dan Dare for the audio audience.Well done and chocks away.

I was really looking forward to this set but why ...
I was really looking forward to this set but why oh why do we need swearing? It might only be "BH" but it is such a shame.. Especially when children choose to listen to it..I bet there was no swearing in the comics, as it wouldn't have been allowed, right?

Nostalgic memories from the past
I remember the Dan Dare comic strip from 'The Eagle' when I was at junior school very many moons ago... I can visualise the various characters as they were presented originally especially the evil 'Mekon' who was essentially a dwarf sized 'Treen' (beings who resided on Venus) sitting on a floating platform in the shape os an upside down smoothing iron. It's well worth investing in some of the old comic strip books to see who these various characters are. Although I was entertained by this radio series I have to say there's no great depth to them...
