Yes, I think this is a good starter set. It is a basic figure eight but you can lay it out different ways. You would need more track to make more complicated layouts. Brio has lots of add-ons. I think it is a matter of opinion which ones are the best, depends on what you want to do.

Q: I have a Brio train set for over 25 years , my 3 year old grandson wants the track longer but I was worried that the new one may not match the old one

I bought some more track pieces and was not able to connect them to the figure 8 set. My grandsons are using it open ended, but the older one (aged almost 5) has tried and tried to make the two sets connect. I plan to try contact Brio to see if the company makes the one piece that seems to be missing. I realize this is not your exact question, and I do not have an answer for that. The tracks on my two sets match, but both are new. I don't know whether a new one would match a 25 year old one.

Yes they are...my grandson has both and they match fine.
