Works Perfectly
This is a great addition to any modern-styled kitchen. The pestle is heavy and easy to handle, and the mortar has a rubberized grip on the bottom and will stay in place. It is not too big that you can't hold it while grinding, either. Both components are solid steel, and feel like they will last for a very long time.

Good product for the value.
Seems to be well made, and I like that I can use both ends of the pestle depending on what I'm grinding. First use was some pretty coarse material, and while there were some surface scratches, nothing I wouldn't expect. Great size.

Comparison with the similar Healthsmart mortar & pestle
This m & p is similar in dimension to the Healthsmart one (ASIN B00FBEC9RM), but more than twice as expensive. So I expected it to be better. But it's actually not as well designed. The bowl is about 6 cm deep, and the bowl of the Healthsmart m & p is 6.5 cm deep. A deeper bowl is good, so things don't jump out. The bowl of the Healthsmart mortar is more sloped, which helps keep things near the middle, where the pestle is hitting them. But mostly, the base of this mortar is not well designed. It's made of sheet metal about 1/32" thick, with a rubber trim. The rubber trim is fragile, and it got cut the first time I pounded the pestle in the mortar. So, I took the rubber trim off. Then I noticed the sheet metal in the base was bent up in one place, which happens easily since there's nothing to keep it in place. The Healthsmart version has a metal trim on the edge of the base, which won't get cut when you pound on it. It should also help keep the base from getting deformed. This m & p is heavier than the Healthsmart one, mostly because the mortar is heavier. The mortar of this one weighs 406g. The Healthsmart mortar weighs 300g.The pestle of this one weighs 334g. The Healthsmart pestle is almost as heavy, 314g.It helps with pounding to have a good heavy pestle. But the weight of the mortar doesn't matter much, because the bowl is smooth. So it's hard to do much grinding by moving the pestle circularly, unlike with granite. It's just for pounding down with the pestle, so far as I can tell. For that a heavy mortar doesn't help. The mortar just needs to be strong enough to withstand the pounding. For circular motions of the pestle, a heavy mortar probably does help. So, the extra weight of this m & p doesn't give it an advantage over the Healthsmart one.

nice heavy pestle
The mortar seems to be thick solid steel. The pestle has a heavy ball. The total weight of the mortar and pestle is 1LBs 14OZ or 30 ounces. The sharp base is covered with a rubber ring. When that ring breaks and probably soon, the sharp base will cut your kitchen surfaces. I would recommend placing the mortar on a cutting board. The heavy pestle makes grinding easy. The surface is smooth stainless steel so its easy to clean. But it also means it may be harder to grind.

Bad design
I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 just because it's well built and solid. The curve/radius on the pestle makes it impossible to use. It's totally round as a ball. they should have shaped it a little flat so whatever you are hitting does not slip from underneath while grinding or mashing. It's totally useless for me.

Mortar and Pestle Set is a perfect cooking tool for any Chef
I love to use a Mortar and Pestle often while cooking. I had one that was made of stone but I kept noticing every time I used it, it would turn my spices pink (same color as the bowl) and it looked to me like the spices sparkled, you know, kinda like stone residue was mixing in too. For fear of causing me future issues with kidney stones I decided it was time for a change....yeah really, Especially after suffering 13 Kidney stones. since I owned the stone Mortar. Well this is one metal and I love it. Used it today for the first time and I'm impressed!!! I think I will box up the other one and put it away.MORTAR (mixing bowl) DETAILS:(Mortar) [ID] is 4-1/2" inches (114.3mm) dia., it stands counter to top of bowl is 3-1/16" inches (77.7875mm) tall. (Mortar) [OD] is 5-1/4" inches (133.35mm) dia. The bottom of the base with the rubber foot ring in place (to keep the bowl from sliding) on your counter is approximately 3-5/8" inches (92.075mm) dia.MORTAR CAPACITY:Mortar when completely filled level to top, holds a maximum of 1-3/4 cups (400 ml) of Oregano and just a little over 2 cups (about 475 ml) of Liquid maximum.PESTLE (hand crushing tool) DETAILS:The Pestle is approximately 6-1/4" inches (158.75mm) long tip end to tip end, The balls of the Pestle (small end) is about 1-1/8" inches (28.575mm) dia., and the (large end) is about 2" inches (50.8mm) dia.

Useless, but it looks pretty
I finally tried using it about a month after buying, only to find that it absolutely does not work as it should. Unfortunately, the 30-day return window had passed, so now I'm stuck with a piece of decoration.Should have read the other reviews that said clearly that a spherical pestle can not grind anything against a mortar. Sure enough, trying to smash garlic cloves with this pestle resulted in them flying out of the mortar. Even those the I managed to start crushing would not mash very well with further effort.Trying to crush anything hard would be even more fruitless.Maybe, if I can find a pestle with a flat end, I might be able to use the mortar, but this pestle is very bad design.
