After spending a fortune coloring my hair at the salon for years I was looking for an alternative to cover my pesky gray hairs around my face. But what really made me start searching was the decision to no longer put such harmful cancer causing chemicals on my scalp that were in the products at every salon I went to. I came across Madison Reed and decided to try it. I was pretty impressed with the professional packaging, the addition of barrier cream to the kit, the clear instructions, the smell didn’t make me want to puke and my eyes didn’t burn or water from any horrid chemicals. I left the color on for 45 minutes. When I was finished I was very pleased with the results and will definitely be ordering again. Those folks who say this product is expensive must be comparing it to box color at the local CVS etc. Salon color can cost in upwards of $200 so this is a steal.

Undeniably a high-quality product. Elegant packaging and thoughtful inclusions like gloves, a shampoo sample, a conditioning treatment, and a barrier cream, everything feels premium. The results are truly salon-like, rich color and shine. Given this level of quality and attention to detail, the higher price point seems fair. However, I couldn't find the full list of ingredients here and had to look elsewhere. I found out it contains ethanolamine in place of ammonia. While the brand markets the formula as “ammonia-free,” ethanolamine appears to have similar effects in terms of hair cuticle swelling and potential long-term damage. Some studies suggest that ethanolamine may even be more damaging than ammonia, as it lingers in the hair longer and can lead to protein loss over time. This makes the ingredient swap feel more like a marketing decision rather than a genuine improvement in hair health. Overall, the product performs exceptionally well, but I would hope for more transparency regarding the formula and its long-term impact.

Second time using this kit and I am happy with the product and results. Kit includes everything, down to shampoo and conditioner. The barrier cream and cleaning wipe work amazing. I have very fair skin and my skin always stains. This stuff helps prevent staining and wipes the excess right off. Odor is minimum. I have lots of greys, very stubborn greys and dye covers them decently.

It was a tad darker than I thought it’d be, so next time I will go a shade lighter. I got this to cover all my gray hair, primarily in the front on my sides. My hair was completely covered for the entire time it recommended. I used all the product, but there were still spots in the sides and underneath that didn’t take the dye at all. I was bummed as I did it right before going to a concert, and I didn’t want my gray hair as an accessory, but it blended in well with the rest of the silver, I suppose. I appreciated the wipe to clean my skin. I could have used an extra one. Maybe that would have helped me be able to get into those areas more closely. I would buy it again, though. It lasts a good while. I did this end of April, and I think I am still covered about the same as I was then. Maybe a tad lighter. And it’s early July. I also wish it came with a root touch up kit, as that maybe could have fixed my issues and extended the life of the product. Hope this helps.

This hair color is just OK. It doesn't last the way other full peroxide hair colors last to cover all my grays. Additionally, the cost is high. I don't need all the extras that I have to pay for in the kit, but they don't sell just the hair color. So I have to purchase the gloves, the cap, the barrier cream, shampoo & conditioner, and a color application bottle - all of these things I already have at home so I'm basically wasting my money. I do have one very positive thing to say which is why I keep buying it - it doesn't make my scalp itch! For that reason alone, I will keep purchasing this kit.
