This isn't just a book with really cool Brian Froud illustrations. This is the real deal if you want to learn ancient runes. Very good book.

When I went to look for that page again, I couldn't find it, like the gold under the rainbow. It will happen to you. At some point you'll discover the page that haunts your dreams, describes your world, or makes you smile.Ari Berk's exquisitely informed text and Froud's always extraordinary pictures combine to open the world you know is there but have forgotten how to see. The runes, charms, and stories delineate the bargains, the sorrows, and the treasures of the journey.Get this book. Get copies for your friends. If you've ever heard the voices under your bed and wanted to know their names, or wept at a sunset for no reason, or considered walking through the door at the back of the wardrobe, just in case--get this book. They're playing your song.

Froud. i shouldn't have to say any more. Ari Berk has fitted runic prose to the lyrical illustrations of Froud. I know that some folks think that the art gets repetitive, but if you're a seeker of detail (and I am), it's the new "little things" that keep Froud fresh in my mind and heart. Any illustrator worth their ink loves their subject well enough to keep the details just as important as the whole picture. Brian Froud never disappoints.

Beautiful illustrations. A must have for Froud collectors!

I love anything by Brian Froud. I have other books by him...he is my favorite artist. He brings the world of Faery alive so that you feel how close that world is--out the door and into the garden.

I like the book, but the seller (or other previous owner) tried to white out the Remainder Mark. I knew it was not a valuable edition of the book when I bought it simply based on what I paid for it. The authenticity of the 'autograph' is questionable. I merely wanted a copy of the book and the price was right. I simply chafe at the idea a someone meddling with a product trying to pass it off as something that it is not.

This book is totally charming. Has good wisdom, and is so fun to gaze at while thinking of the wisdom of that rune. Its fun! I love it.

Brian Froud's books are the most whimsical and beautifully illustrated

Another beautifully illustrated book by the legendary Brian Froud. I bought a copy of this for my friend years ago, and I always wanted one for myself, so when I saw it advertised at a special price I jumped at the chance of buying it. It’s so beautifully written too, I spend hours looking through it. If you love the Frouds, you’ll love this book, it’s a must-have!

Mit der Zeit gerieten diese Erzählungen immer mehr in Vergessenheit, bis sie schließlich nur noch in vereinzelten Büchern auftauchten und aus dem Alttag der Menschen verschwanden. Vorbei sind die Zeiten von Gedichten, Fabeln und Limericks.The Runes of Elfland greift einen Bereich dieser alten Erzählkunst auf und befasst sich mit einem Aspekt von vielen, dem Hintergrund von Runen. Das Buch startet mit verschiedenen kurzen Texten über Runen im Allgemeinen, verfasst vom englischen Literaturwissenschaftler Ari Berk.Anders, als man es sonst gewohnt ist, sind die Runen nicht alphabetisch nach ihrem Namen sortiert, sondern nach ihrer Bedeutung. So beginnt der eigentliche Inhalt mit Berkanaz – der Rune, die stellvertretend für den Neubeginn steht. Wenn man die Runen jedoch nicht nur als Buchstaben betrachtet, stört dieser Umstand nur wenig.Jedes der 24 Symbole wird auf den folgenden Seiten in The Runes of Elfland mit einer ganzseitigen farbigen Illustration einzeln vorgestellt, begleitet von einem einleitenden Text zur Charakterisierung der Rune und einem kleinen Zauberspruch zu Beginn, gefolgt von einer Erzählung, die auf alten Sagen und Überlieferungen fußt. Einige der erzählten Geschichten werden vielen Lesern zumindest entfernt bekannt vorkommen, andere dagegen sind bis heute so selten von modernen Medien aufgegriffen worden, dass sie beinahe völlig unbekannt geblieben sind.Insgesamt widmet das Buch jeder Rune vier Seiten. Brian Froud streut dabei auf allen Seiten charmante Hintergrundillustrationen von Elfen oder Goblins ein, die den Text optisch noch ein wenig aufwerten.Frouds Pinselduktus ist in diesem Buchband weniger fein, als man es vielleicht aus anderen Büchern von ihm kennt. Die Figuren sind etwas schrulliger, die Farben etwas intensiver und alles wirkt insgesamt kantiger und grober. Angesichts der Thematik passt das jedoch auf harmonische Weise sehr gut zusammen.Wer des Runenalphabets nicht mächtig ist und noch Hilfe bei der Entzifferung benötigt, dem wird auf den letzten Seiten geholfen. Dort findet sich das Runenalphabet samt seiner lateinischen Entsprechung. Da verschiedene Überschriften und Beschriftungen in den Bildern in Runen gehalten sind, empfiehlt es sich daher auch, dem Runenalphabet gleich zu Beginn ein wenig Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen.Kleiner Abzug: Wer gerne die Namen der einzelnen Runen erfahren hätte, wird in diesem Buch leider nicht fündig. Angesichts der sonst großen Fülle an Informationen, wäre es schön gewesen, auch für dieses nicht unwichtige Detail, einen kleinen Platz zu finden.
