Solid tool
I used this shoulder plane for over a month and it functions perfectly. The tool was reasonably sharp out of the box but after a secondary bevel with 3000 grit it shaves whispers of wood.Even after tweaking a bit it still leaves a tiny shoulder in the corners. This is easily cleaned up with a sharp chisel .Very happy with the purchase

OK for the Money
I purchased this for a very specific window restoration project. The cost is from 1/3 to 1/4 of some of the better quality planes I've used in the past but I didn't want to spend that much for the amount I'll be using this. The plane body and materials were OK but needed honing to get it up to par. This would be the reason this is so much less expensive than some other brands.I had to perform a lot of honing on the blade to get the back flat and cutting edge square and sharp. This is a typical task for most new planes but this needed much more time on the stone. The base of the shoe also needed honing. Especially the lip just below the blade that was way off square. Took some file work and honing to get it ready to cut. Probably spent almost an hour getting everything sharpened and squared up.After all the above, the plane cut very well. After planning down a shoulder on cypress, the blade stayed relatively sharp. I did discover a hidden nail that put a small chip in the blade. It barely touched and I think a higher quality plane wouldn't have chipped so badly. However, error was on my part and not necessarily the plane. After resharpening the depth adjustment knob stripped off the screw. Instead of trying to go through warranty and with all the honing I’ve done, I’ll drill it and tap it for a roll pin.Although this appeared to be a good value, I’d not buy another one. I think the blade material won’t hold an edge for long and you have to do a lot of milling and honing to get this thing in shape. Spend more and get a better quality.

Sturdy and functional
In woodworking one spends a lot of time shouldering, rabbeting, lapping, chamfering, and touching up edges. This plane does a fine job for these tasks. It is substantial, adjustable, and efficient. It fits the hand comfortably and has a hard enough blade. Highly recommended for its very specific function

Good Little Tool
I had an old "Stanley" No 78 which was awkward for a left hander to use and was always out of adjustment.. This little gem is comfortable to use both ways. It's easy to adjust and cuts beautifully.

fit and finish is very good.
I bought this shoulder plane as a back up for my other shoulder plane. I was pleasantly surprised at the nice fit and finish of the metal parts. Machining of the blade looks good and the blade width appears to be exactly the width of the plane body. I have yet to hone the blade edge but I expect it will sharpen well. Overall it seems to be a nice little shoulder plane and I would rate it as a very good value. The only negative I found was the small adjustment screw in the plane body that acts as a stop for the body in front of the blade (adjusts the gap in front of the blade) is quite loosely threaded into the body. Thats not a show stopper so I would recommend this for anyone who needs their first shoulder plane or a backup one.

Sending it back
This just isn't a very well made shoulder plane. It's a lot cheaper than similar planes from the more esteemed companies, and there's a good reason for that. The machining is pretty sloppy, and the knurled adjuster slips loose & doesn't adjust properly. The blade honed-up okay under a whetstone & strop, but I still didn't get clean cuts on the edges and had to do a lot of chisel clean-up afterward. Bottom line, if you know you need a shoulder plane, you need a better one than this.

Happily Lee Valley was out of stock
Working on a mission style table and six chairs with a pile of mortise and tenon joints. Normally I would have bought the Leavalley tool, but they were out of stock, so thought I would try this. After I honed the blade and put the tool back together I was very impressed with how well it worked. It is a nice size and perfect for cleaning up machine cut tenons in a project like this. Saved me a lot of work and definitely resulted in a better finished product.

Rough diamond
Literally a little rough around the edges but nothing that wasn't fixable within 60 minutes of tlc. Remove the swarf, re-tap the hole for the blade adjuster, flatten the sole and flatten and sharpen the iron. Having done that, the result is a sweet little plane.

Not as I expected
Quite basic, straight from the factory covered in grease. I sent it back as there is no way I am capable of putting it right. Was hoping for something that worked right out of the box.
