I used my pressure cooker for the first time tonight and the steam came out from under the weight. Why?

Hi, Carol. The reason was already answered by Bharti U Pandit; as pressure builds in, some of it has to be released. This pressure cooker doesn't make a continuous noise after the pressure builds in, it blows a 'whistle' intermittently, the more often the higher the burner of the stove - I find the whistles very useful because I can count them even when I'm not in the kitchen. Gradually I was able to know how many whistles before potatoes (2-4), black beans (10 or more, if not soaked overnight), chickpea (15 if not soaked overnight) etc would be cooked. Hope it helps.
