"The Way" to start your day.
This short book contains 999 sayings/advice/maxims (although the introduction would rather avoid this word) of one of the greatest saints of the 20th century, Josemaria Escriva. The sayings (for lack of a better term) are organized by topic, such as faith, obedience, the will of God, and tactics. Some critique this book for having "fortune cookie" sayings; that is, short quips which sound appealing at first, but after a surface glance are devoid of substance. I would argue that nothing could be further from the truth. Rather, the more one contemplates these sayings, the more wisdom and insight one gains. For example, this book contains the often quoted saying "Don't say 'that person annoys me' but say 'that person sanctifies me.'" This points to the profound depth of God's providence. He places in our lives everything and only everything that is beneficial for our sanctity. Hence, the "annoying coworker" is really an opportunity, a grace from God to grow in holiness. Isn't that amazing how the Catholic faith can turn around what would otherwise be a pointless and annoying aspect of life into one of the most important opportunists to take advantage of? Remarkable. One could easily being one's day by just reading a single saying and meditating on it, or pursuing his sayings until you find one that strikes you or speaks to you. A saying that I have come to often repeat from the book is "You are bored? That is because your body is awake and your soul is asleep." My children have become quite annoyed at hearing me say this, to the point where they will say "I'm bored... don't say it! Don't say it!" For the record, I will ALWAYS say it. The point is, with 999 sayings, you can easily find just one that you can begin to regularly incorporate into your life (and annoy others with which, as we saw above, is a very great opportunity for them!)We have lost the sense of reading and studying both the writings and lives of the saints. There is, in my opinion, so much division in the Church today because we do not have a sense of how the saints themselves thought. This book is a great first step to begin to conform your mind to that of a modern and great saint. I highly recommend this book.

Practical and Profound
This is a book of short excerpts from various writings by St. Josemaria Escriva. They are great for daily devotions or just a quick "pick me up" whenever you want one. The man pulls no punches but sometimes you need a kick in the pants vs a pat on the back! :) Escriva has a very practical, down-to-earth approach. I like it!

Classic Spiritual Reading that Engenders Prayer
The author speaks to you as if you were the only one in the room. The direct approach keeps you focused. The style is to be read in small chunks. Daily, read just a few points and consider them in the presence of God in silent prayer. Saint Josemaria writes for the busy professional, worker, and those who seek to learn how to bring their Christian faith to their friends.
