I have watched all four seasons of “The Killing.” If you enjoy crime-drama, you should definitely see this!The two main characters are Detectives Sarah Linden (played by Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (played by Joel Kinnaman). These characters and their relationship are very memorable to me. They complement each other beautifully. They are equally dedicated and talented. Linden is more intuitive and Holder is more physical. Holder has his own slang way of speaking. (The dialogue of this of this series is one of its strengths.) They both have troubled pasts that fuel the intensity of their work. Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman are both fine actors whom I had never seen before.What really distinguishes “The Killing” is the amount of time devoted to the development of other characters: the victims, their family members, and the criminals. Many of them become three-dimensional people.What some may see as a downside to the amount of time devoted to character development is that the solution of the crime enfolds very gradually. All of Season 1 is devoted to the investigation of a single murder, and at the end of the 13 episodes and nearly 10 hours of Season 1 we still don’t know who did it. The solution of the crime is not achieved until the end of the 12 episodes of Season 2. This caused lukewarm reviews from some of the original TV viewers. (The four Seasons were originally aired on TV during 2009-13.) But now that we can watch both Seasons back-to-back by either streaming or by DVD, I don’t see this as a problem at all.Seasons 3 and 4 are each devoted to the investigation of a single crime apiece. Season 3 ends with a real shocker, and Season 4 shows the resulting unravelling of the life of Detective Linden, which is painful to behold. The end of Season 4 was very effective and brought tears to my eyes, a sign of how invested I was in the two characters. I notice that Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman have now been brought back to co-star in the current Amazon series “Hanna.” The two actors play off each other wonderfully.One regretable issue is with the presentation of “The Killing” on DVD. Season 1 is well-presented on either blu-ray or DVD, including closed-caption subtitles, but Seasons 2 through 4 are only available on DVD-R format without any subtitles. This is a problem. Detective Holder speaks in slang that is difficult to anticipate. There is a degree of fast-talking and mumbling by other characters. Even after frequent “re-windings,” I found myself unable to decipher about 5% of the dialogue.

If you are a murder mystery fan The Killing is a must see. The principle actors are great. The main story is superb. Seattle locale is suitably wet. Secondary actors blend well. I purchased the dvds knowing I would watch this movie repeatedly and have. I rate The Killing at 9+.

I originally watched this on Netflix about 7 years ago, and it was immediately addictive. This is incredibly well done in all respects, from drama, writing, acting, some small action parts, believability, character development, plot twists, scenery and settings contrasting the good and bad parts of the Seattle area (where I once lived). I ordered Season 1 and started watching and had forgotten just how excellent it is, especially the acting of the parents' grief, the detectives' personal struggles, the professional struggles of law enforcement and politicians, the shady dealings, etc. If you like crime drama thrillers this is a must see.Note, Season 1 & 2 are the same crime and Season 3 is a different crime. Both are excellent. Season 4 took a remarkably downhill slide in quality and is rather forgettable and average and can be skipped.

5 stars are for the show itself. Amazing.Seasons 1 and 2 should have been released together, as you don't find out the identity of the murderer until the end of season 2. For some bizarre reason, only season 1 is available on blu ray in North America. All four seasons are available on blu ray on region 2. Extremely annoying.

engaging, well acted 'who done it'

Reasonably priced, item was purchased as a gift, arrived before Christmas......very pleased with my purchase!

The Killing is a superb detective drama with a complex plot and characters. The pairing of Detective Linden, a petite red-haired woman with tall, former addict Holder is just brilliant. Don't expect to solve this case quickly - things never turn out the way you expect but you'll be hooked with every twist and turn. Warning: you have to watch the entire second season to find out the answer to riddle!

Great show, excellent writing. I love everything about it. All the actors are fantastic, from the leads to the supporting cast. Cinematography and soundtrack is mesmerizing.I was debating between the DVD to watch on a CRT tv and the Blu Ray version to watch on my 1080p projector. I went with the DVD considering how dark most of the scenes are and I have no regret. The transfert was done properly and it looks gorgeous on a CRT tv, deep inky blacks and amazing contrast are really the strength of CRT tv and it suits the imagery perfectly.I haven’t seen the original Danish show but the American adaptation is really, I mean really really good.Shipping was fast and price was good but apparently you don’t know who the killer is until the end of season 2. It seems very difficult to get it so that’s definitely a bummer.If it’s true as other have mentioned, then they really should sell season 1-2 together as to wrap up the story.
