My kids love Moshi Monsters and this game was a great addition to their collection. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ katsuma unleashed *by N***S on March 26, 2014* this is a good game but you should relly get just for the code! it is only 3.25 for ds and i gives you a code for splater the ultra rare moshling! and you can get it without the codes for a doller less! ### ⭐⭐⭐ Mediocre exploration 2-D platformer *by A***R on November 29, 2020* I like searching for gems in lower priced / lesser known games. Is Katsuma Unleashed one of those gems in the rough? In short, no. It's not bad, but it's not great. This game is a 2 Dimensional exploration platformer. Mechanics-wise, the game plays very similar to the 2-D Super Mario games. Each level consists of a large course. You start on the left side of a course. You need to get to the goal, which is on the far right of the course. Along the way you'll jump on platforms and avoid hazards such as pits and spikes. You'll also encounter enemies which will make your goal more difficult. There are lots of side areas to explore. In every normal level, if you explore every side area, then you can find a stone tablet and up to 3 Mushi monsters to rescue. You don't need any of these extras to beat the game, although I think (but am not sure) that there is a reward for 100% completion. The game has a normal mode and a hard mode. I only played in hard mode. In hard mode, the difficulty is moderate. From what I gather, normal mode must be beaten to unlock hard mode. From the difficulty in hard mode, I would expect normal mode to be fairly easy. There's not much else to say, so I'll list the bad and good points I found with the game. I'll start with the bad news first. Cons: - Awkward controls. The game has three control schemes, none of which I like. My hands got cramps while playing. In addition, if you press down on the joystick / d-pad and the jump button at the same time, Katsuma will perform a jump that is not really a jump. Since I was using the analog joystick, I accidentally did this way too many times. This often made me fall to my doom. - Game slowdown. The framerate is choppy during most of the game. - Long levels. Each level takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, and that's if you're not looking for hidden secrets in the level. There is no timer, but it can still be exhausting playing through super long levels - Backgrounds are too detailed and blend in with the foreground. In some levels it is nearly impossible to tell what is a platform and what is the background. - The camera and backgrounds move around too much. This gave me eye strain. It also made it hard to track where my character was at times. - Some areas do not play intuitively. For instance, I encountered a slope with a ramp at the end. The idea is to slide down the slope and launch off the ramp. But, doing this made me miss the next platform and launched me to my doom. I eventually got used to it and figured it out, but it shouldn't have taken as long as it did for me to figure it out. - Sprites are small compared to the rest of the screen. I feel the sprites should be bigger, or that the camera should have been more zoomed in. Now the good: + Good level design. Each level felt fresh. There were a couple of elements I recognized from other games, for instance enemies that move like Medusa's heads from Castlevania, or winged platforms borrowed from Super Mario World. But, the world still feels like it's own. Overall I enjoyed the course layout. + Excellent character moveset. The controls may not be good, but Katsuma jumps, slides, and spins intuitively and fluidly. + Interesting use of powerups. You gain a new power after every defeated boss. Powerups are creative and work like Megaman where each has a β€œpower gauge” that tells you how much / how long you can use them. Powers include the ability to throw eyeballs, ability to slow down time, and the ability to fly for short durations. + Excellent replay value. Many levels require back-tracking to get 100% completion. + Detailed and fantastic graphics. There may be confusion where the foreground and backgrounds are, but the backgrounds look amazing. + Decent sound. For example, the enemies sound nice, and Katsuma makes sounds like a cat. It works. Overall Katusma Unleashed is a mixed bag. Taking all things into consideration, I'd suggest getting a higher quality game than this. The extra money is worth a better gameplay experience.
