Useless for 1” tube
When using the clamp on 1” tube, basically useless. It holds it but there’s no space to weld the two pieces together.

Better than expected.
These are smaller than they look but lightweight and easy to use. I am using the to wrap samurai sword handles (called tsuka) with lacing (called ito). I use the clamp to hold the ito onto the tsuka while I flip it over to work on the other side. They make a similar tool in Japan just for this task, but they will not let you buy one unless you are a member of the sword making groups there. Well, with this tool, I don't need theirs. As for using it on pipes or wood, it would work great. It's one of the best clamps of its kind that I own and I own a lot of different ones. You can't go wrong with this unless you need a really big clamp.
