Joel (Tom Cruise) is a high school student of seemingly sober conduct. However, when his parents go away he trashes the house, loses the Porsche in the lake and, through his association with a local prostitute, turns his parents' home into a house of ill repute. Review: Classic Cruise - To be honest I cringe at the type of movies Cruise makes these days but it's obvious from his great performance in Risky Business, that occasionally he can pick a good role. I'll be 39 next month and watched this film for the first time in over 20 years last night. As the dvd entered my machine, I couldn't help thinking this film maybe rubbish now but It surprised me just how good it is. Helped no end by the superb cast, not just Cruise & De Mornay but Curtis Armstrong & Bronson Pinchot are both hilarious and who could forget the great Joe Pantoliano! This was a favourite of mine as a teenager but me and my friends were more interested in De Mornay and emulating the guys playing cards & smoking cigars than anything else. Considering the time it was made, the film has dated much better than other movies of the 80's. The Tangerine Dream soundtrack also deserves mention. As for the features (25th anniversary dvd), a very good half hour retrospective with almost everyone involved. Also a commentary featuring Brickman, Cruise & Avnet, worth a listen if you have time but I definitely recommend the retrospective. Alternate ending which director Brickman prefers & theatrical trailer. However, I already owned the standard dvd and the picture quality is the same. Review: A time when Tom Cruise skill was greater than his ego. - If you find Mr Cruise a bit arrogant for your liking and avoid his films, don't avoid this one for that reason. He's cocky for sure, the part demands it, but not in the same uber confident way he now is. In fact as his debut it probably suggests he's rather a good actor, if he'd just stop playing himself (which he does here too, to be fair) It really is a very entertaining film - perfect for teens as well as adults. It's 18 but I'd say 15 would be more than adequate and I would not mind it being a 12, although it will be enjoyed more by the over 15's I think. Very little nudity; one rather steamy scene and some adult themes about call girls, but it won't tell you anything you didn't know. Really entertaining, nothing heavy duty. There are supposed to be deep meaningful undertones to the film if you look at the directors cut and explanation, but don't let that worry you!

Sometimes You've Gotta Say, What The....
In the 80s, we saw a spate of movies catering for young men, teen movies of sorts, that would usually have some sexual element to it. An example of this was the Porkies series, although it's not as mature as this movie, the element of fantasy, and sexual interaction was a big part of the movie. Risky Business was an interesting start for young Tom Cruise, who, at the time wasn't that well known. His co-star, beautiful Rebecca De Mornay was also rather unknown, so director Paul Brickman was taking a risk with them. Tom Cruise plays Joel Goodsen, a young guy from the burbs of Chicago. He's obsessed with his grades and nervous he's going to ruin everything for himself. He doesn't really like messing around, but when his parents go away on holiday - his pal Miles gets him a call girl - but he really doesn't like her. She suggests lovely Lana, a sexy blonde with beautiful eyes - and the magic starts. Joel helps her get rid of a creep called Guido - who she says is her manager but we all know he's just a pimp - but what he doesn't realise is he's getting himself into bother, hence why it's a Risky Business. This is one of Tom's finest movies, the good old days when he wasn't taking himself far too seriously, a golden age where he just made movies - and the better for it. His portrayal of Joel is great, his nervousness is perfectly on par with teens of his age. Rebecca is also great as Lana, and really fits the role well. The best scene has to be the one where he's on the train making love to Lana, the use of Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" is really good, and the way it's not explicit lets you use your imagination. You can even loose yourself for a moment in the silhouette of trains, cityscapes, and Tangerine Dream's reoccurring theme - which is a dreamy synth pop piece which spirals out of distance. The blu-ray is good - 1080p AVC with 5.1 or TruHD in English, there's also the French and Spanish soundtracks, but they're in 2.0 and mono respectively (!) - plus the commentary from Paul Brickman and Tom Cruise, which I have yet to experience. The quality of the remaster isn't eye-poppingly good, but it's fair, and is better than the DVD as it's less compressed (well you'd really hope so!) and the image is more vivid. The best part of the film is on the train picture quality wise, but the low moment for me was outside when Joel first meets the pimp. The special features are not too bad either, there's an alternative ending that Paul really wanted to have in it; a retrospective of the movie 25 years on, which I thought was cool and the screen tests with Tom, to see how it was going to pan out. The only problem you might have with this title is that the commentary needs BD Live support, so if you have an older BD player you'll need the latest firmware. On the PS3 it was fine, and in PowerDVD 7.3 (latest update) it was fine too. Well worth getting, it's one of those movies you'll come back to again and again.

A Very 80's Movie
Like Pretty Woman, some might accuse this movie of glamorising prostitution. In fact, it is a cheerful tale of a young Tom Cruise exploiting the absence of his parents, whilst overcoming the many dramas created by his misdeeds. Fashion fans should love the 80's styling, big hair and all. If you like Back to the Future, this is probably for you!
