Impostors

The original Uglies series was what really got me into reading YA, and I can say with all honesty that I think Scott Westerfeld is a YA-writing genius! I started this book on Saturday night & finished it slightly before 2am on Sunday morning. I’m sick & *so* tired, but I just literally could not put this book down.I’m loving that Westerfeld is writing again in the world of Uglies, and this new storyline has me absolutely (and obviously) hooked. This story was jam-packed with action... and while that doesn’t usually appease me, I absolutely loved it. It contained just the right amount of passion, family drama & questioning... could we really turn into a world like this?Frey is such a well-developed character, and I love all facets of her relationship with Col.ALSO! Mega bonus points for having a character with gender-neutral pronouns without making a big deal about it. 💜I need the next book to come out NOW!

A new story in the same world as Uglies, but not overshadowed by Tally’s story the way Extras was. It’s a strong first installment in a new standalone series. The characters are compelling, the twists and turns are solid and believable but not predictable, and the ending sets up a great premise for the sequel. The writing is also noticeably better than the original trilogy—sometimes it gets downright poetic.Sorry, Specials. This is definitely my new favorite book in the Uglies world.(And guess what? No love triangle!)

No matter how long it's been since I last read an Uglies book, I can always slip into a new one and it feels like coming home. The world is always incredibly well realized, and I love how each book builds it out a little bit more, introducing new tech and new societies.Frey is a worthy new protagonist in the Uglies universe. Her city is just as terrifying as Tally's was (though Frey is much more aware of the atrocities at work than Tally was to start), and the stakes have never been higher.The only thing holding me back from a full five stars is this doesn't feel like it connects meaningfully with Extras. Facerank, first introduced there, is mentioned several times in Impostors, but the big climax of Extras felt like it should change the world...and it's conspicuously absent. Maybe it'll come up in future Impostor books? Here's hoping!

Though Talky doesn’t make an appearance they talk about her a bit. I was sucked right back into this crazy-making world. The characters were great; though they needed a little more depth. The love story was a bit quick and “brain-missing” but at the same time, with Frey’s childhood, it makes sense. She’s never had anyone before and Col stepped right in. I can’t wait to read the next book. Thank you Mr. Westerfeld. Your books always make me feel bubbly.

It has been a few years since I finished Scott's previous books and I remember loving them but this new glorious addition to his series reminded me just how incredibly brilliant he is. I was riveted from the beginning. The societies he creates are so unique, morbid, and fascinating all at one time. My only complaint is that epic cliffhanger that he left us with! Mr. Westerfeld, that was evil of you because now it's going to be torture waiting for the next one! So alas I will do the most sensible thing in this situation...re-read all the previous books again. All kidding aside, hats off to you sir! That was an incredible read!

You got a lying, female protagonist with a love interest who has complicated family relations, them versus the world--what more could an Uglies fan want?The protagonist is very easy to get behind, the concept is fantastic, and everyone likes a good underdog story. Some of the lines were absolutely chilling, and the villain is painted very well.The world is going back in the direction it came from in the Rusties era, and it's up to Frey to make sure society isn't lost in the process. The ending makes me intrigued to read more definitely, and see where the story goes.One star lost for deaths of extras that affect absolutely no one, especially not the reader, as well as the lightning-fast love development going on. LGBTQ+ fans will be happy to know there is a character who uses gender-neutral pronouns. That's awesome. HOWEVER! My only problem with this is that we read the book from first-person perspective of Frey, who admits herself she doesn't know the political players of the game well because that's her sister Rafi's job. So unless that thing in her ear tells her so-and-so prefers to be spoken to and about in gender-neutral pronouns, how does she know to do it?!?! I know this is a really small and picky thing but it really grinded my gears for some reason. I think it's awesome how aware and modern Scott is when it comes to gender identity, and he's really started opening up the dialogue in the YA world to LGBTQ+ relationships and identities which I think is wonderful, but because this was a first-person perspective of someone who actually knows very LITTLE about the people around her, the gender-neutral pronouns didn't quite ring as "seamless" to me, although I do think it was otherwise very smooth and well done.I'd actually give this 4.5 stars if I could but so it goes.Looking forward to the sequel and seeing how our characters develop over time. I love the way Scott writes relationships between women, that's always been one of my favorite things about him as an author--unafraid to make flawed characters with struggling relationships. It makes the characters and the relationships all that more real.So glad we're back in the world of Uglies!

Loved the story line, by where's the ending?

I read the Uglies series years ago and it was such a blast being back in that world! I love adventure stories and as a plus the characters were interesting too!
