Cheshire Cheese Cat, the: A Dickens of a Tale

A delightful story for all ages.
I saw this online and was intrigued by the premise and the illustrations. So, what do you do if you are a healthy, hearty cat that would rather eat cheese than kill and eat mice, and are now on the street because you are a terrible mouser? And what if you stumble upon the one place in London that makes fabulous English cheddar? And needs a mouser? And has very understanding mice?Read it and find out. Charming illustrations, fun, quirky story with a lot of 'AHA!' moments. I bought it in paperback and ended up purchasing it in hardback. You will enjoy Queen Victoria's appearance at the end. Dickens, too...I have one caution: there is a scene where one of the mouse characters is put in a very dangerous situation. All is well in the end, but a small child might be disturbed by it.

Deserving of Newbery Award
Carmen Deedy deserves the Newbery Award for this outstanding book. It's the best read-aloud I've seen in a long time---perfect for ages 8 through 13 as one parents should be reading aloud to their whole family. I read it on my own and couldn't put it down. Gave it to all my kids, big and small. The history, the Charles Dickens presence, the plays on words, the vocabulary (high end), to say nothing of the charming tale. It put me in mind of The Tale of Despereux, but maybe better. Of course advanced readers would do well on their own, the subject might make them think it's for "kids." NOT. It's a story to be shared, a book to be discussed, a can't-wait-for-the-next-chapter kind of tale. It should be made into a movie. And if you ever have a chance to hear Carmen Deedy tell her stories live, don't miss it. She's a winner, and so is the book.
