Bachmann Industries 4-4-0 American Steam DCC Central Pacific #60 Jupiter Wood Load Locomotive (HO Scale)

II had a "stay-alive" capacitor installed to get the two axle drivers over the dead "frogs" of my switches.Now it works perfect over all switches and pulls 3 antique historic cars up the 4 percent grades on my hills. And now there are no stalls anywhere on the layoutIt is a great and fun addition to my fleet.And it goes right along with the United States Post Office's new Transcontinental Railroad 150 anniversary postage stamps.

Liked the looks and detail of this locomotive but it lacked the ability to pull more than 2 light weight cars without struggling on the slightest grade. I think is too light so the drive wheels spin on the slightest grade or curve. Was disappointed that I had to return it. It sure looked great on my layout.

My son loves it! He's been into trains for about 9yrs but never got any with lights and sounds, he's so happy! It works great right out of the box! Arrived fast even with the holidays and 2020 causing havoc.

4 stars for the engine, 1 star for the documentation.The engine is cute but light on the drivers. Very limited in what it can pull even on flat terrain. Less than 50% success rate going through Bachmann ez-track turnouts from the point end. Sound is decent though chuff is somewhat faster than the wheel rotation.Main complaint is the included documentation which while basic does point you to two web sites (Bachmann and Soundtraxx) for further documentation. Neither site worked - both returned 404, page not found. So here I am, wanting to program other than changing the engine's address and I can't. I don't know what CVs are available on this limited decoder or what values are available for each CV. I'd like to try to adjust the steam chuff, try different whistles, etc. Did not have any luck programming in ops mode, so have to move to a programming track, try a CV/value pair and then put back on the running track to see what, if any difference it made.

The front cauldron cap fell off. A lateral trim was bent. Unaceptable for such an expensive item.

This is a fun little engine. Having DCC sound is really important - once you've tried it, it becomes a must-have. This engine will move at DCC speed 1 (unlike some other engines), but to run smoothly it must be speed 2 or higher (speeds go up to 28). There are DCC settings called "CVs" - Configuration Variables - that could probably adjust this; I am reporting "out of the box" behavior. The only real issue I have had is a tendency to derail passing through Bachmann turnouts, a problem with the turnouts and not the engine itself. Overall, very happy with this engine. I suggest checking ModelTrainStuff for a better deal before you buy.

Item was not built as is normally expected from this manufacturer. Amazon quickly replaced the 1st shipment,but then shipped the 2nd the same way: it also arrived damaged.

great sound
