Works well - Easy to install
I was able fairly easily install this unit - in fact had to do it twice. The only downside was that there was a cotter pin on the transmission that blocks movement of the parts during shipping. Unfortunately there were no instructions indicating that this needed to be removed. After my first installation I could not shift the transmission into gear. After removing the transmission and comparing it to the old transmission I noticed the cotter pin and removed it. I immediately saw that the transmission was now completely mobile and in working order. I reinstalled it and the mower runs like it is brand new. Fast, crisp acceleration. I'll update my review if I have any further comments down the road

Don’t avoid the alternative
I installed the transaxle on my John Deere D105 riding mower. It is functioning excellently. I tried to repair the original but had no luck. This was the perfect alternative, to what was becoming a disaster. I’m very happy that the price was affordable.

Works great John Deere D105
I acquired a John Deere D105 a little over a year ago. It had less than 100 hours on it and seemed to run fine. After one season it seemed to have trouble climbing hills and the overall performance was subpar. By the time it reached 118 hours it wouldn't move on a flat surface. After much research and replacing belts, I determined it must be the transmission. I was a little hesitant to order from Amazon, but the price difference compared to the dealership was the selling point (I did contemplate buying a new mower first). Long story short, I installed it and it runs like a brand new mower now. It was easy to install and took only about an hour from set up to clean up. I am praying this one will last longer than 118 hours.

Consider it a consumable item
OK, it's a PLASTIC transmission and while it works, it's not one of General Transmissions' best ideas. I got 253 hours of operation before it could no be repaired any more and had to be replaced. But, that's less expensive than replacing the entire John Deere D105 mower. The weakest item is the spring loaded CVT pully system. At least that part can be ordered and replaced. The problem with the part is the top cap for the spring is held on with a very small pan-head screw. Over time the screw hole in the cap gets larger and fails. This happened at 90 hours. I replaced it but added a flat washer under the screw. This extended the life of that assembly out to the 253 hours when the transmission itself froze-up.The transmission is easy to replace and took me about one hour to do the job. There is a large pin installed for shipping at the front of the transmission that MUST be removed after everything is bolted in place. My guess is that I'll have to buy another transmission in another 250-275 hours.

Worst transmission ever made for a lawn tractor.
Fails so much they stopped the assembly line. Worst transmission ever made for a lawn tractor. Laughable to the point of sadness.

untapped belt retainer bolt hole
You need to tap a 1/4" bolt hole with-28nf threads. This is for the bolt that the belt retainer uses as a spindle.Otherwise, the uninstall/reinstall job is really easy and quick.Tools required:1/4"-28nf plug tapwrench/socket sizes 13mm, 10mm, 8mmNeedle-nose pliers and a flathead screwdriverTwo jack-stands and a small floor jack
