Works, but not quite what I wanted
Ordered and installed the Schlage FE595, and so far, it's pretty much what I expected. It seems strong and solid, and the finish I purchased (bright brass) seems like it will hold up well, even exposed to the elements. I also like that you can order whatever style door knobs or levers you want, replacing the ones that come with the unit.Installation went fairly smoothly and took about half an hour total. The unit looked big out of the box, but mounted on my door, it's not objectionable at all. It was a bit tricky to install and was a bit more involved than other door hardware I've installed. Specifically, it took a few minutes of fiddling to get the parts to align properly, and I'm afraid this is needed every time you need to change the battery. I invested in a 9V Lithium battery, which I'm hoping will last much longer than the 3 years advertised. The other installation issue I had is that the latch seemed to have some rough edges from the manufacturing process, causing it to bind part way open and not extend all the way into the door jamb. I buffed these rough edges down with some steel wool and applied some graphite lubricant until the latch worked smoothly. No big deal, but a sign that maybe Schlage needs better quality control.Programming was straightforward by following the instructions that came with the unit. I suppose if you didn't want to, you could skip this step and just use the default codes that come programmed into the device. I'm just paranoid enough to want my own codes, so I deleted the defaults and assigned my own - took under five minutes. Two other gripes about the unit and the shopping experience:First, prior to purchase, I posted a question to one of the other reviewers in here about whether the lock generates some sort of audit trail so I can tell which codes are used when. Although I was told the Schlage has this feature, in fact, it does *not*. You can program in multiple codes and selectively enable/disable them, but you can't tell code "1234 was used Tuesday at 9:00AM", for example. Schlage has other products with this feature, but the FE595 doesn't.Second, the literature I read suggested that the Schlage can be keyed to match other locks, but this isn't completely true. Your other locks would all need to use the same cylinder assembly, and that pretty much eliminates the Baldwin ones I have.To be clear, both these issues were my fault for not doing more research, so I don't necessarily blame Schlage - but I did check their website, post questions to other owners and so on - and I still got the wrong information.Still, now that I have it installed and operating, I have to say that I generally like the product and don't regret compromising over the couple of lacking features.

Good lock, but some design recommendations recommended.
So far, so good- I put one of these in at my son's and liked it so much I got one for me as well. It's real easy if you are replacing a Schlage lockset, b/c you can use the backset and striker already in place. This gives you a spare backset in that case, which is good, b/c this winter I had two broken backsets!Installation is dirt simple, and so is programming. The 9V battery lives indoors so no issues with cold, but I wish Schlage had made an access door to change the battery. You have to remove the entire inner escutcheon to access the battery, and things lose alignment, so you have to spend a little time plumbing it up.I love the lighted keypad, but wish the buttons were bigger so you could use gloves.I also like the feature that allows you to have auto locking when you leave, or switch to non-locking when you are home, going in and out a lot.I would expect a waterproof gasket on the outside- nothing there at all. You could apply a little silicone sealant (and I might), and that would also hold the outer escutcheon in place when doing battery changes. My lockset is under cover so for me it would be more for wind than water, and the convenience of holding in place as aforementioned. My son's is indoors, so no issues with either of those elements. It's a pretty tight fit anyway, so wind isn't such an issue. All in all, I really like it. I read the reviews about short battery life and loose internal parts, so I'll be watching for that. If they had designed it like I suggest, then it would have been 5* instead. Saves me from fumbling the key to get into the house, and it is pretty sturdy construction. I like Schlage the most as an affordable and well made lockset.

Excellent Product, but Measure Carefully! Also: Low Batt indication at 3 1/2 years.
Ordered 3 of these, but had to return one. I think there was probably enough information on the site for me to know in advance that one would not fit, so I felt I had to return it at my own expense. MEASURE CAREFULLY. I have two 36 inch doors and one 32 inches. All are 1/2 Lite (1 large window takes up about 1/2 of the door's height). All were drilled at 2-3/4 inches setback but on the 32 inch door that puts the centerline of the factory drilling at only 1-1/4 inches from the window trim. Since the overall width of the housing for the Keypad Entry Latch is 3.01 inches (according to the Specifications) I needed at least 1-1/2 inches clearance from centerline of the drilling to the edge of the window trim. I should not have ordered this for my 32 inch door. But because this information was a couple of mouse-clicks deep, I subtracted a star. Also be aware that you CANNOT use BOTH the Keypad Entry Latch and the Keypad Deadbolt on the same door. There is not enough room vertically between the standard factory drillings for both of them to fit. I could not find any dimension drawings on the site which would help determine that.Excellent product. Looks great. Pleased with Schlage quality. A locksmith can rekey the 5-pin cylinder if desired, but I decided to just program the same code(s) since the key is only used for completely dead battery condition.UPDATE: With 3 YRS IN USE, the original (supplied) 9 volt batteries are still in service. No problems. Finish still looks good.UPDATE: With 3-1/2 YEARS IN DAILY USE. Indication of low battery (red flash on led prior to green with valid entry code). Time to change the battery. Still pleased with this purchase. Finish still looks like new. Both units are sheltered from the weather.

I've had this keypad about a month and love it. It was very easy to install and program. The instructions were easy to follow. I had worried that the unit would look big and bulky on the door but it looks great. I love the convenience of no key entry.TIP: my door handle is further away from the door's edge than normal, so it requires a 5 inch latch which meant the regular one that came with the keypad was too short. When installing previous new door knobs, I've reused the same latch. However, the post for the keypad was larger than the hole in the old latch. Knowing that the latch was at least 30 years old, I bought a new one (Schlage) from the local building store. It's made now with a larger hole and worked just fine.
