This book is for those serious about japanese and who have already invested serious amounts of time in to the language.
This entire book is in Japanese, and why shouldnt it be? The JLPT N5 is a heck of a lot harder then people think. The institution that prepares the JLPT each year recommends 150 hours of study for the JLPT N5, but in all reality that is hardly enough. With 150 hours of study you might pass by sheer luck only understanding that which is specifically tested, which seems like flying by the seat of your pants i.e. not really understanding the language.I bought this book because Ive put thousands of hours into the language in the last decade, but like I mentioned above, I knew that the JLPT is in 110% japanese when you test for it. That means if you really want to earn the certification, and feel like youve earned it, and know that youve earned it, and didnt just barely pass....then you need to understand 110% of the real exam. From the Front Cover to the Back Cover.I love this book because it is essentially the test in a small format so you know exactly what to expect on the real exams. This book is not for someone who just wants all the answers without study, or wants to breeze through the book and be ready to go. Theres actually some fairly advanced grammar and japanese kanji in this book, which dont even appear in the N5 kanji list, so thats what Im saying when I said above, that you really need to have the desire to learn and be able to understand 110% of this book, or you will only be getting the minimum required to MAYBE pass the N5, if even that. This book is not worth your time or money if you can not invest serious daily time into studying it, on top of your other misc studies/home life/work life etc. And I highly recommend knowing a good 300-400 kanji, at least 500 vocab, all the basic expressions, conversations, etc, your basic verbs and adjectives, grammar etc, to the T, before you even bother buying this book, or youll end up setting the book down after the first look through and never touch it again. If you are really really serious about passing the N5, for more then just a "fun cool thing to do", then buy this book, otherwise keep moving, this book is not for you.

The book to get you to understand the layout of the N5 test
I gave this book 5 stars because of what I was expecting from this book and that is the layout of what the test is pretty much going to look like, it gives me a good idea on what the questions could possibly be, and it's all in Japanese so this is excellent for reading practice. This book is not for: Someone who is completely new to Japanese that cannot read Hiragana and Katakana, as well as having no understanding with the Japanese vocabulary, you should understand Hiragana, Katakana, language structure, and vocabulary first before picking up this book. This book is for: The person who can read Hiragana and Katakana, don't worry there is Kanji in the study sections but thanks to furigana you will be fine, also if you are wanting to prepare for the test and have the question, what will this test look like? This book is for you also it has test questions for all the sections that will be tested and last but not least it will include a CD for the listening part. One last thing: If you know someone who can read Japanese beyond the N5 level have them help you with the question explanation part or better yet try to understand it for better practice.Good Luck to all that will pursue the N5 test and have fun learning Japanese.

Very straightforward and formatted like N5. The actual test is
Basically the test and uses all of the vocabulary you need to practice. Very straightforward and formatted like N5. The actual test is, as expectd, more difficult, but this workbook provides a solid foundation in conjunction with Genki and other language tools. My advice: Do not just use this book, use other tools such as Genki I and II, Jisho.org, Duolingo, etc. There is only so much one book is going to teach you and while it is helpful for the format and overall idea of the exam, it should not be used alone

This is a test. Only a test.
This book is not for learning about how to take the test. It is the test. You are buying the test to take and test yourself. I used it to pull out any kanji I might not know. This book is great to see where you might need to study more or if you should test at a higher level.

Great Test Prep Book
My son was pleased with this product since he will be taking the JLPT N5 in June. Be aware that the entire book is in Japanese. If you don't know a basic understanding of Japanese, thus N5, this book is not for you.
