Superheterodyne Radio} , It does not work like one ? More like a crystal radio
This receivers sensitivity is way better then I thought it would be on all bands ! The sound is crystal clear and easy to listen to . {Selectivity is poor} . I would say on the AM and SW side it is like a crystal radio with a RF amp , with local stations overlapping over all the dial and the most powerful stations being heard by themselves . FM on the other hand is great and tunes in some distant stations . Now days when a manufacturer puts a low priced radio together they use one or two ICs to do most of the receivers functions or to make it play . One RF can coil and a plastic 455khz Osc . Usually there are a lot more stages and that is where the selectivity and image rejection comes from . It does suffer from images on SW and the dial readings are way off on the AM band just like I read in the reviews . But the FM SW-1 and SW-2 band on mine are right on frequency . The speaker looks bigger then the 3" Coby says it is in-fact it is 3 5/8" . I can only imagine how long the battery's will last being they are D cells and only 2 at that . This receiver is only good for listening to powerful stations because of the selectivity or the ability to separate stations . This receiver is well built .

Good bargain for value price receiver.
I rate the radio 4 stars in comparison with others of same price range. My experience was the AM signal reception is quite good for both medium wave local stations and short wave broadcasts. FM performance is not so great. If I want to hear FM maybe a signal will come in if I stand under a utility pole holding radio over my head. The clock works as does display light. Alarm turns radio on loud. No alarm buzzer or beeping sound.

COBY CX39
These looked like an ideal candidate for Christmas gifts as they are priced quite competitively. Purchased a total of 14, in two separate orders. When the first two units were received we were amazed at the fidelity of this very small radio - and still enjoy listening. The case composition and construction is what you would expect and is of decent quality - as is fit and finish. The manufacturer needs to put a little more work into the digital tuner which is not as accurate as might be expected - with most AM and FM stations being far off their frequencies. Tuner issues aside - this is an enjoyable radio, compact and very portable - and is very much at home in the venue of sporting events, picnic's, the beach and camping. Overall, we rate this as THUMBS UP and are comfortable in recommending it.

Cheap radio with poor performance
This radio fails at its fundamental purpose of receiving and playing radio signals. The AM reception in particular was abysmal. I was only able to tune to one station clearly and even it had an annoying high pitched noise. Other radios that I have in the same location work without issue. Beyond the poor reception, the tuning dial is completely inaccurate. I was expecting a cheap radio that could at least function as a radio. What I got was a cheap, poorly constructed radio that does a spectacular job of playing static noise. The clock works.

Great little Radio!
I bought this radio primarily because it had AM, and a headphone jack. I was actually impressed, especially because Coby isn't known for having quality products, but I guess it's hard to screw up a radio. You only need the antenna for FM, so I never really used it, but doesn't rotate (it only goes up and down) so be aware of that. Also be aware that although it has a digital display you have to use a wheel to change the frequency, and there is no "scan" button to find the next channel, and the channels can be off a little (+/- 20 MHz). However if you scan around you should find what you're looking for. There is also a clock with a programmable alarm built in which I didn't have a use for, but it could be useful to some people. The radio is very light, has a good quality speaker, and is inexpensive. I would recommend this radio to anyone, but it's real selling point for me was the headphone jack, and the fact that it got AM.

Quality control issues at factory
This is the 2nd time I've purchased this Coby CX39 radio. The first time, it performed well and I gave it to my roommate as a parting gift because he enjoyed listening country music radio stations out of it. The 2nd radio I purchased, I thought the quality was due to high voltage powerlines nearby that was causing poor reception. But I have a boombox stereo playing in another room. I moved that boombox to the kitchen and realized I can receive more radio stations on it that I could on this Coby CX39 :-{ Besides poor reception, the digital readout display is out of calibration. When the radio DJ would pause for station identification, they'd announce (for example) "...news 980.." (AM dial), yet the digital readout shows "990." I turn the dial to 980 and I loose reception on the radio station. I've posted this Coby CX39 on Craigslist and had sold it for $5 to some Hispanic guy (illegal alien) who spoke limited English. Thus, I was able to recover some of my $$.

Great Little Radio for the Price
After a few storms that knocked the electricity out, I really had to have a battery operated radio on hand, and this was perfect because it not only operates on batteries (D-size, not included), but has an AC adapter which I really appreciate so that I don't go broke on batteries. I like the way it tunes in and the quality of the sound is very good. Frankly, I'm not bothering with setting the electronic settings up because I'm just too lazy, but it's nice that the option is there. I feel much better now that I've got a battery operated radio. Just be sure to purchase your batteries when you get the radio. I love that it came with the AC adapter and I did not have to send away for it and spend extra money for what I consider to be a necessity to save on battery costs.

Cheap Coby Radio Works
A got it to listen to the presidential debates since I have no working TV. This inexpensive Coby radio did the job just fine. Picks up strong local stations loud and clear, without static. Not much good for fine tuning weak stations, and not much to pick up on SW. Plug in works if you have a socket, have yet to try it with batteries. If you live near radio stations, have little money like me, then give it a try. I'm very happy with it.
