Rather it is assembled rotor with 3 commutators and two terminals which can be mounted with plastic gears and permanent magnets to act as BDC motor or generator. The assembly is very easy and it takes maximum 5 minutes for me and 10 minutes for my kids. He is an expert at Legos--building the 14-16 year old sets. He found this fun and it is still on the front of the toy shelf. T&K manuals are like mini-science books. They have been great to re-teach the mom too :) **Q: Seriously... gender - boy!?! really!? girls need to know about science and engineering, as well! the gender description should be removed!** A: Definitely for Girls, too! I’m with you there! Amazon needs to know that Electronic learning is not gender specific to Boys and needs to put the Electronic learning category under all genders! **Q: Does this set turn gears to make other sets parts move** A: There are 2 gears connected to a generator through a hand crank. There is a clear plastic cover over the gears so you can see how they mesh together as you turn the hand crank. **Q: Is this compatible with the Thames and Kosmos Electronics learning circuits series of kits as an alternative to the battery compartmentt?** A: I’m not sure. It had exactly what I'd wanted -- gears, magnets and coil, and a working mini generator. The kit does do a good job of illustrating the principles involved, and in a manner way more engaging than what is typically used in schools!! Or in my schools, anyway. The booklet was also very interesting. Overall, I think this item would make an excellent gift for an intellectually curious recipient!! As for its compatibility with other kits, specifically electronics, that's a good question! It does mention hooking up more than one generator together, so you ought to ask, because obviously, duh, that would be awesome! Overall, a fun purchase!
