A worthwhile read
This is an excellent book. The author knows his biology and forestry, and his writing is not only interesting but enjoyable and easy to read. I am a stickler about good writing and I think he gets the prize for non-fiction craftsmanship on trees and forests. I would tell my forestry colleagues and grown children that if they read this book carefully, they will learn how to be a better writer.

Read it before your next hike
Really interesting book. It's a nice mix of science and memoir, just enough of each to satisfy a lay person like myself, who enjoys the outdoors, but has no scientific knowledge in this area. I was looking for something with a sort of spiritual lilt, and while this book can be technical at times, it can also open you up to thinking about nature and your place in it in different ways.Read this book before your next hike.

Could Flow Better
Nice book of musings, but would of liked a more cohesive or umbrella outline of the book before getting into each chapter.

An intimate relationship with a Northern forest
Nice description of a close relationship with a forest and the gentle pleasures of observing its cycle of life. Insights into the life of trees and the creatures that depend on them. A good book for those who appreciate the subtle lessons of nature.

Great Book
This book does not disappoint. It is written in Mr Heinrick's usual style which puts complex scientific information into language the average person can understand. He doesn't dumb it down; he explains how a process works by giving first hand observations and his opinions. It was as if I was sitting with him in his woods. He explained the science behind our ordinary observations-why some trees are tall and other not, how they grow from center and lateral buds and how that can show age for example. This is a very enjoyable book for the nature/outdoors reader. I learned much from it and had a good time doing it.

Great read, very enjoyable
Alt how I have been a woodworker for many years, I learned a lot about trees and how all of Gods creation interacts to make it all work. Great read. Lots of detail and the authors personal experience with his forest.

A Loving Story of a local ecosystem - understanding forest systems
I liked this book so much I bought another copy and donated it to our local lending library. Dr. Heinrich brings his lifetime of academic study to illuminate his loving picture of his woodlot and its natural systems. Never preachy nor inaccesible, his descriptions are rich and aimed at lay readers. If you want to learn more about Northern Appalachian mixed deciduous/coniferous woodland communities, this is an excellent source. I've lived and worked in the same ecosystem for years but learned a lot from this book.

What a find! This book is a treasure
Absolutely fantastic! Bought for kindle but will also buy for home library. Part poetry part life story definitely my kindred spirit! For those that share a love of flora and fauna everything outdoors and those who just generally love the land this is for you. Those looking for a book about trees may just fall in love with the forest.

Holds my attention better than any novel.
Heinrich has a masterful understanding of the life of trees, and has a way of explaining it that kept me enthralled for hours on end. He is one of my favorite natural science writers, and I look forward to reading his next book!
