Great sound in a tiny package – surprisingly powerful
I’m someone who really feels music. I’m not obsessed with specs for the sake of it—I just want gear that makes music come alive. After several weeks testing the Fosi DS3 with music, gaming, and measurements, here’s my honest experience. Build & First Impressions The DS3 is a very compact USB-C DAC/amp with a CNC aluminum body and a small glass window. It feels solid and looks surprisingly classy. I actually brought it on a work trip, and multiple coworkers asked about it because of the design—even though it’s technically marketed as a gaming device. My Testing Setup Sources • Asus ROG Ally X • iPhone 16 Pro Headphones • Sennheiser HD600 (main testing) • Meze Alba Comparison gear • Apple dongle • Fosi K7 • Qudelix 5K • Moondrop Dawn 2 Sound Quality Compared to the Apple dongle, the DS3 delivers noticeably more power and clarity. With my HD600, I’d estimate around a 20% improvement in separation, detail, and overall musical engagement during repeated back-to-back listening sessions. Volume is also slightly stronger—about 8% louder in my measurements. Tracks like: • Instant Crush – Daft Punk • Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana • No More Tears – Ozzy Osbourne all sounded cleaner and more controlled, especially in busy passages. Gaming Performance I tested it with: • Forza Horizon • Elden Ring • Death Stranding • Outer Wilds • Genshin Impact Games that support spatial audio really benefit. In Forza Horizon and Outer Wilds, the sense of space and environmental detail improved noticeably compared to standard outputs. There’s also a FPS mode designed to emphasize directional cues like footsteps. Power & Compatibility The DS3 uses an ESS ES9039Q2M DAC with an XMOS XU316 USB processor, supporting up to 32-bit/768 kHz PCM and DSD512. It includes both 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm balanced outputs, and the balanced port is a great addition for portable gear. It’s powerful enough to drive headphones like the HD600, which surprised me for a device this small. Battery Use (iPhone) Battery drain compared to the Apple dongle was basically negligible in real use. Comparisons • Qudelix 5K: more features and Bluetooth, but the DS3 has noticeably more output power and simpler plug-and-play use. • Moondrop Dawn 2: good for IEMs, but the DS3 offers more power, more features, and balanced output. Pros • Very compact and portable • Noticeable sound improvement over phone/laptop outputs • 4.4 mm balanced output • Plug-and-play with no app required Cons • Included USB-C cable is short • No screen (not a big issue, but could be nice) Final Thoughts For anyone who loves music and also games, but doesn’t want to carry a full desktop setup, the Fosi DS3 hits a great balance. It’s small, powerful, and genuinely improves the listening experience. After trying to make bigger DACs portable on trips, the DS3 ended up replacing them for me.
