The wood and design of the guitar has some bearing on it, but generally speaking, the heavier the strings, the more total volume is possible. Heavier strings are usually "warmer" sounding, and have more defined low end tones, but they also are the hardest on your fingers. Lighter strings often lack the low end warmth or definition people desire, but are easier to play and have a nice ring in the mid-high end. In the end, it all comes down to preference and application. I use Light (12-53) but usually play plugged in. I get even tone and definition when practicing, and can "shape" my sound in my pre-amp on stage.
