Since moving to Hawaii I have been doing a ton of snorkeling and diving and it is so much fun to look through this book after a dive and get to know all the little creatures I've just seen. This book includes all shrimps, snails, crabs, sea urchins, octopus, starfish, anemones and lots of other cool stuff. Must have if you dive in Hawaii

My new husband and I used this book to help us identify the urchins, corals and crabs we photographed on our big island honeymoon. The book was very helpful and easy to use. We liked the interesting information introducing each section. We are strictly amateurs in photography and biology, but we still found the book's organization and content understandable.Every once in a while an anatomical term was used that we did not see explained somewhere. It would have been helpful to have those defined somehow, or perhaps a basic anatomical drawing to represent that animal type at the beginning of each subsection, with labels to the key parts that are frequently referred to in the species descriptions. Most of these terms we were able to figure out, but there were just a few that we could not. Overall, the book is excellent, even for folks like us without an extensive science background.

High quality book with great actual photos from the underwater world. My child prefers it from the cartoon variety. He was 2 years old. Learning starts young, so learn with the facts. And it will be informative through high school

Love this book! Filled with informative information. I purchased via the “Used” option. Book shows some signs of wear on the cover only (few marks and some spilled acrylic paint?)- but that does not bother me at all because I only paid $12 and it’s an AWESOME book!! Recommend this buy.

I live in Hawai'i, and I refer to this book constantly. It's written in a way that is informative, down-to-earth, and yet professional. We use this book to ID critters but also to learn about them. Hoover's background information gives 'regular' folks an understanding of the science involved. Yet, the book is an easy read, with whimsical stories and details that help you remember much that you've learned. Once I read this book, it opened my eyes to so many little creatures that I didn't even know existed. Clearly, having this book as expanded my diving and snorkeling horizons in ways that I never imagined. I gave a copy of it to my brother, who doesn't even go into the ocean, and he loved it. It's that good.

As a scuba instructor, I use this guide on all dive trips to ID the wonderful creatures in our Hawaiian waters. My students love to use the book to ID creatures they see on their dives and then log the experience in their dive logs.The book is comprehensive and full of wonderful color photos which help you to easily identify what you discover.I highly recommend this book for any dive professional or ocean enthusiast.
