## Overview

The OTC 4619 Professional Battery Hydrometer is a precision tool designed to measure the specific gravity of battery electrolyte between 1.100 and 1.300, providing an accurate state-of-charge reading. Featuring a built-in thermometer for temperature compensation and a flexible rubber tip for easy access to all battery cells, this compact, durable hydrometer ensures reliable diagnostics for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

## Description

OTC's No. 4619 Professional Battery Hydrometer displays a batteries specific gravity (density) on an easy-to-read float with a scale ranging from 1.100 to 1.300. Hydrometers are used to test the state of charge of a battery cell. This is performed by measuring the density of the electrolyte, which is accomplished by measuring the specific gravity of the electrolyte. The greater the concentration of sulfuric acid, the more dense the electrolyte becomes. This high quality hydrometer includes a built in thermometer that indicates the correction factor - based on specific temperatures - that must be added or subtracted from the float reading to arrive at an accurate specific gravity reading for each battery cell. Features glass and rubber construction with a flexible tip that offers easy access to even hard to reach battery cells while the battery is still in the vehicle. One year limited warranty. Value is at the core of the OTC tool and equipment portfolio. For a simple repair or the most complex drivability concern, these award-winning tools universally solve problems faster, and at better value, than any other product line available. Whether it’s a specialty tool or unique piece of service equipment, OTC provides top solutions to modern automotive service challenges while increasing technicians’ productivity and shop profits.

Review: Function for many years - Great product and its exactly the same as one I've had for 45 yrs. The old bulb got hard over the years of use and cracked and became none fictional.
Review: great value but agree it's fragile - great value, well made easy to read -- I think I will be quite happy with this tool. But it is fragile! I read every review here, noted the fragility so I made a nice little case for it from 2" PVC pipe but I still broke the thermometer when I went to disassemble it for cleaning the second time I used it. I think it comes apart easier than others reviews lead one to believe. A little careful rotation of the rubber parts on the glass breaks the rubber free and allow you to carefully slide it off for thorough cleaning. having read the float was quite fragile, I made sure it was laying horizontally and fully in the middle of the glass tube away from the rubber parts I was removing from the glass. but I wasn't thinking about the unsupported thermometer as I twisted that portion and I snapped the tiny tube. (yes I know mercury is dangerous, even the tiny bit in this tiny thermometer - I sealed the remainder with some hot glue because the little bulb of the thermometer penetrates the rubber tip so you have to leave the broken part to seal the hole from dripping electrolyte everywhere). Oh well, where my batteries are mounted, I don't have to deal with huge temperature changes and I can check my SG after the batteries have relaxed for a while on float charge.... the SG scale is quite easy to read but I still made an enlarged version and attached it to my case so I can easily differentiate the numerical value of my actual readings. And be advised the specific gravity of electrolyte varies by battery manufacturer, I was a little surprised to see that my SG target value (what my marine batteries come with) was just a couple tiny marks into the green.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is the tip thin enough to go into a motorcycle battery? I bought a cheapie from my auto store that was too wide to fit!**
A: I don't currently have a motorcycle, but I see a problem. I the tip size may be an issue, but I would have greater concern with the volume of acid to be drawn up. The glass tube is fairly wide and you need to draw enough acid that to indicator float actually floats. This is about 3 inches. I suspect that this may be more than the total volume of a cell. If you think the volume is OK, you can insert a piece of small plastic tubing in the hydrometer and reach into the battery with that.

**Q: will this hydrometer work for both car batteries and deep cycle batteries?**
A: Yes as long as you have access to the acid in the battery.

**Q: My hydrometer only reads fair for all of the cells on six different batteries. I have another older and different type that reads good. Is mine bad?**
A: Batteries are hard to figure out at first. The best advice is probably to compare one or all cells to the others on one battery. Comparing one cell of one battery to one cell of another is not good. I would first read up on batteries in general through facebook or an RV website. The hydrometer is a good unit, but the glass tube is very fragile. Mine was received with the upper portion of the glass crammed into the rubber stop inside the bulb. I had to break it off evenly and repair it with some silicone gasket material. I think you will be impressed if you compare it to one of the plastic ones.

**Q: Your ad states a proud heritage; does this mean this item is specifically made in the United States?**
A: I believe this item is made by Bosch, which has a proud heritage, but is not made in the USA.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ great value but agree it's fragile

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Quality hydrometer thats more accurate than pointer types.
*by K***O on December 3, 2013*

Up until recently I had been happy with the pointer type hydrometers but the newer ones are awfully inconsistent. So I decided to try this glass hydrometer. Having reads the reviews I was prepared to get a broken one and sure enough I did. So along with the replacement I decided to order another one as well. Both of the new ones arrived in great shape. I did notice the floating glass bulb was a 1/4" longer on one along with the alignment of the graph that was about 3/8" different. But to my amazement they both read EXACTLY the same. So this proves to me that each bulb is checked for weight. Since I use mine frequently I wanted to hang it up by the provided hole. To keep the bulb from banging against the side during storage I installed a 5 1/4" piece of 1/4" hard plastic tubing over the tube top so that the tubing fits over the thin glass top all the way down to the weighted section. When installed the glass buoy will snug up against the rubber on both ends. Tubing on one end and glass bulb on the other. For usage you still have to remove the rubber bulb to remove the plastic tube but this only takes a few seconds. For storage with this plastic tube installed the floating glass bulb will not move around at all if the proper length of tubing is installed. I'm happy I switched over to these glass hydrometers even I did knock off a point because of the fragility. kd
