THE LIFE AND TIMES OF G.D. BIRLA (OIP)

Outstanding book and person
Excellent and outstanding book, profoundly researched, yet very readable. I quote Sumantra Goshal, London Business School: "Medha Kudaisya draws a marvellous picture of the evolution of India over the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, seen through the vantage point of the exceptional man - G.D. Birla"- As a student I was a driver of the Birla family in Switzerland in the mid-sixties. I remember G.D. Birla as a tall, vigorous-sportive and rather modest man, I was not aware of his importance. I knew that he had some big factories. Only while reading the book I realised what was going on politically at the time I drove him.- As the book is not delivered to Europe, I ordered it on my first trip to India this year. I was prepared to get some kind of hagiography and was quite 'shocked' when I received something that looked like a thesis (what it once was). I was on holidays after all. I started reading it and was amazed about the fluent style, I could not stop, left the other books aside. It is like a panorama of Indian history with the focus on one remarkable man.
