how do you know how much you've added with the 1l bottle ?

You should be injecting you sealant with a large syringe such that you know how much you’ve put in. How much you depends on multiple factors like tire size. Good luck.

Has anyone used this with success without first cleaning out a different brand of sealant, such as Orange Seal?

I don't know--"but" you should periodically remove your old sealant--removs the clumps, ya..., clean the inside of the tire and the valve stem for best performance
