Review of True Patent Value
For those with a deep interest in patent evaluation and value assessment, True Patent Value is a thoughtful and thought-provoking resource. After outlining core concepts in patents and their valuation, the book dedicates 300 pages to case studies and anecdotes associated with more than two dozen patents from court cases, ITC actions, patent pools, patent sales and PTO citation records. The author explains what makes these particular patents stand out, provides background and helpful charts to guide the reader to an understanding of the claim language in the patents at issue, and explains how related court cases developed and were decided. Valuable "lessons learned" conclude each case study. To understand the workings of patents and their value, there is no substitute for delving deep into court cases and the nuance of particular patents. Larry Goldstein speeds the reader through that process, sharing his insights into what makes for a "good patent" and the types of mistakes that should be avoided.

Patent portfolio manager point of view
I found the book True Patent Value to be extremely helpful in answering a true and very pressing question - what is my patent worth? The approach by Larry Goldstein of teaching what is a patent intrinsic value, as shown by many use cases, helps in answering such a question. This is a serious question that arises when patents are put on sale, when a third party is interested in acquiring a single patent or when a patent is deemed necessary for the business and its value needs to be assessed.Furthermore, it is an extremely important subject when a need arises to cross license a portfolio, or to contribute a patent to a patent pool (see the MPEG-2 example.)Readers of this important book can learn how to spend their patenting budget to achieve a stronger and more valuable portfolio.
