Prewash fabric and leave damp.2. Set machine to longest wash cycle, hot water & lowest water level to cover fabric. Start cycle.3. When machine is full, use rubber gloves and add dye and 4 cups of salt. Close lid and allow to agitate for 1 min. Add fabric and allow wash cycle to finish. Before dye solution has drained, restart machine to beginning of cycle to ensure fabric is in dye for at least 30 minutes. Allow cycle to finish.4. Leave fabric in machine and add detergent. Run full wash cycle to remove excess dye. Additional rinse cycles may be necessary. 5. Line dry fabric away from sunlight and direct heat.6. To clean machine -- add 1 cup of bleach and detergent and run longest hot water cycle with machine empty. Wipe machine surfaces with a bleach solution.COLOR SHADE:The shade you achieve depends on water/dye ratio, fabric amount, type, and color. 1 lb of fabric per 1 package (100 gram package) should achieve full color.Lighter shades will result on fabrics with polyester blends.Color mixing rules apply. Dying something black can make things around dye too. I used a bucket in the garage to dye some trousers I had and they came out very well. Wear rubber gloves or you will have black hands. These dyes are very good and will work well. Also, make sure the article is wet before you put it into the dye bath. If you are uncertain about the weight of clothing try using two packets of the dye as that will guarantee the blackest black you can get. Also, wash separately for quite a few washes as excess dye will leach out for a little while. Each time I have washed a dyed article I rinsed it with salt in the water. The salt will seal the dye better. **Q: Has anybody tried this dye in a front loading washing machine?** A: Most commercially-available fabric dyes need 1) immersion in 2) hot water with 3) a mordant such as salt and 4) time for the dye to bond with the fibers. A front loader uses far less water than a top-loader; it doesn't fill a tub with water like a top loader does, and just doesn't give the fabric enough time soaking evenly in a volume of water with heat to set the dye. **Q: How well would this work on 100% Egyptian cotton? Going from white to black?** A: Hi Maureen, in general all cotton dyes well. White fabric to Black dye produces a good outcome. I add distilled White vinegar and Epsom salts in HOT water with the dye. Let the garment soak 2 or 3 times longer than the directions call for. Use more dye to insure a deep Black color.
