Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite: The Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours

Despite all of the "updating" of the liturgy since Vatican II and the newest edition of the Roman Missal many priests, liturgists, music directors - in essence - everyone involved in preparing liturgical celebrations will benefit from this book. Why? because the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and the rubrics of the present Missal do not spell out all of the nuances of good liturgy. Bishop Elliott spells it out succinctly and directly about the expectations of these rubrics that cause us to scratch our heads and make us wonder how, why and "what do they (the Bishops who approve and adapt rubrical notes) mean by that? For the "out of the norm" Sunday celebrations his guidance is paramount. Yes, some things mentioned are obviously held over from the pre-Vatican II days of liturgy but they still apply to good liturgy today. CAUTION: this book must be read in light of the new translation of the Missal, of course, but the guidance is invaluable. His instructions have been lost to time and lack of a continued knowledge of how to get things done. This book and his "Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year" are a must for all.

Mgr Elliott describes with due economy and clarity the modern liturgy of the Western Church. This edition adequately allows for the additions and refinements to the liturgy in accordance with the provisions of the 2002 Latin edition of the Roman Misssal. It should be required reading for all who seek to celebrate the Eucharist with essential diligence, love and care.

Absolutely excellent! Everyone involved in the Catholic Liturgy should have a copy in their sacristy!

The book is good but I wish it can give reasons for some of the things we do.

If you want an informative reference book on the execution of Holy Mass, this is a good supplement to the GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal.) Its practical, user friendly and clear.

Great book to help you understand all aspects of the Catholic Mass. . . HIGHLY recommended

This is fine if you want to know exactly what to do , but it reads at times like an engineering manual. It does what it says, but there is little soul here. Nor are there explanations for why a certain prayer can be used on weekdays , but isn't considered suitable for Sundays for instance . It needs more commentary as well as descriptions and rules.

Answer a lot of questions that I had

This is a book of considerable importance as the only English-language ceremonial for the ordinary form of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, and perhaps the only such ceremonial in any language. In print form, it merits 5 stars. Sadly, the Kindle edition is not of the quality one would expect at this price, being marred by what look like OCR errors: "from time to time, for example while making Ids [read 'his'] annual retreat" (n. 182); "Tie [read 'He'] arranges the vessels" (n. 223). They are not on every page, but are frequent enough to be annoying. Also the scans of the diagrams at the end of the book, though readable, are visibly pixelated.As with good ceremonials of the past (for what is now the extraordinary form), the author documents his affirmations with footnotes. These are also useful for differentiating the author's opinions on what is best from liturgical law. The second edition has been updated, taking into consideration the rubrics of the third typical edition of the Roman Missal (2002) and the instruction Redemptionis Sacramentum (2004).
