You can update to the latest version of 3 Pro for free but an upgrade to SCAL 4 Pro costs money. The current sale price for the upgrade to 4 Pro is about 50 bucks. **Q: Can you upload a jpg file on sure cuts a lot software** A: Yes you can cut out a jpeg file **Q: Can I use it to work with garment ( t shirts ) and to use heat transfer vinyl rolls ?** A: Sure you can that's why I bought it **Q: Let's say you want to cut a design beyond the 24 inch width (30 inches.) Will the software allow you to make a design that big but cut it in 2 pieces?** A: The software allows you to make designs in any size. In order to cut it out in two pieces I think you'd have to make it two seperate designs though. I was very pleased with how sturdy the stand is in particular. A few notes to make things even better:1. Assembly: There are no assembly instructions included nor instructions as to where to find them. They are online at uscuttersupport where there is a good video to walk you through the process. It took about an hour to assemble from start to finish, with the help of a second pair of hands for about 10 minutes of that time to get the crossbar lined up and attached on the stand.2. Vinyl: The included vinyl is all gloss vinyl. It has worked well, but there are applications for which a matte finish is preferred. So, heads up - if you want a matte finish, you may want to order vinyl separately.3. Accessories: Really everything that you need to use the cutter is included, from software to vinyl to a weeding set. However, here are two things that I have purchased in addition and found worth the extra expense:i. 31 inch Aluminum Big Foot Safety Ruler for Vinyl Cutting Trimming This 31" safety ruler makes it much easier to cut straight lines and to do so safely.ii. Fiskars Fingertip Craft Knife This Fiskars knife is inexpensive and its design gives you good leverage. The knife included in the set is a bit difficult to hold. I worked in the sign industry for 10 years (through the '90's) and always wanted to buy my own vinyl cutter, but was discouraged by the price of a good friction feed plotter (i.e., Mimaki or Roland). The price was was right and all of the extras are worth the value. The instructions can be found online and assembly was fairly simple. The software could definitely use some work, but it's a free software license, so there's no need to purchase an expensive sign-cutting software suite. If you do most of your design work in Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw, which can both export in Scalable Vector Graphics format (.svg), then you'll be very pleased with results of your plotted graphics.
