One of the best books for beginners
Title is self explanatory. In vaidic astrology, there are two types of books. Classical books which are foundation stones. And modern books like this one, which are explanatory in nature.Classical books are too much coded, rigid, sometimes contradictory hence difficult to understand. Hence one needed a guru to understand them. This is modern book which is easy to understand. Based on experience of the author. Author is trying to explain concepts like we have in self paced education system of today. My suggestion to new readers is that, though it is book for beginner, it will require multiple reading to understand concepts. Don't expect a predictive understanding in first reading.

Must Buy for Astrology Novices
This is an amazing, detailed book that will become your cheat sheet for Vedic Astrology. The best thing is the example charts at the end of the book that are explained to show how their methods can be applied. These are famous people’s charts so you also have a faint idea of what happened in their lives. All in all, definitely get this brilliant book.

Nice read for beginners
The approach is good. Much better than most of the video tutorials you find online. However, I sometimes watch some additional videos to grasp more insight on a specific topic. Also, I prefer to enhance my hindi vocabulary by watching hindi tutorials as i go along the chapters. Because I can relate more to hindi works like rashi, drishti, rahaa, graha than their English words.

3 stars because of condescending tone at many places
These two authors spent good amount of their life in India but never understood what makes India a unique place in the world! The authors talk about Aryans as the ones who brought Vedas, also entertain the idea that Jyotish is borrowed from other cultures which westerners have been whining for a very long time because when did they accept anything and everything that India gave, it was a gift to the world and humanity. The authors also say that throughout Indian history several sects claimed that they alone possessed the truth which is utterly ridiculous.Very few people like Dr. Frawley know the true greatness of India while every other foreigner comes to India, learns the secrets of Jyotish, Yoga etc. go capitalise in the west and then talks with utter condescension, not to mention about how these foreigners charge thousands of dollars for teaching Jyotish. And then we Indians have to become subservient and act like they will teach us our heritage, our roots and Jyotish!

The Best Intro to Jyotish (but not the simplest or easiest)
I have read 8 books on Vedic astrology and numerous articles and videos over the last four years or so. I number of books I just glanced at via "sample" books. By far the best introductory book to this immense topic is Light on Life. It is both comprehensive and detailed to be considered more than just an introduction to Jyotish. It is a book for both beginners and intermediate astrologers. If I had only one book to choose, this would be it. Is it the only book you will need? No. For example, it does not give much credit to the study of Shad Bala and does not cover a number of predictive techniques. But both of these would need another book to adequately cover (and for predictive techniques, there are several of which each of these could use a book or two). But de Fouw and Svoboda do an exceptional job of introducing he heart of Jyotish and providing many detailed indications of the planets, signs, houses, and even a good introduction to the Nakshartras. For example, they list many characteristics of the planets that other books simply ignore. Also, their commentary on each house adds unique insight to the already detailed list of indications. The only fault, if you can even call it that, is that present so much information and do it so concisely that it can overwhelm the beginner. You may need to reread portions several times before a concept is understood. However, if you make the effort and do not give up, you should find this book to be an immense aid throughout your astrological studies. While there are areas of controversy, I still believe this book to be the best out there.
