I was looking use this for hip thrusts instead of pay a much higher price for Bret Conteras' bench. Think it'll work as well?

I have not used mine for that purpose. However, I use it as a squat box. I weigh 200 lbs, and with 200lbs on my back, the box easily supports my weight. I have used it as a plyobox... It is not safe to be used that way it's too unstable. I hope this helps.

Can you add more small boxes for height

I would not recommend this for jumping plyometrics. It is too unstable to be safe. It is better used for box squats.

This would be stable enough for a kid right? My son is 73 lbs and I just don’t want him to shred his shins on a box.

yes it totally would id put it by a wall though until he is able to control his jump just in case. im 260 and i jump on it just fine
