TAKE ME TO THE RIVER
A superb examination of a human life. While the author speculates, he does so based on deeply informed scholarship, writing with flare, and plausibility. (Author is a leading expert on Aramaic, the language of ancient Palestine.) I plan to read the book again. If you prefer your old-time Jesus with "cream and sugar" you might find this intense. I've now read it again, and am still resonating with the vividness of the central character of this historical-but-somewhat-novelistic biography. It has blessed me, and sent me deeper into scripture. Highly regarded book! (Update: I've now read it for a third time, and given away three copies.)ps: Pay little attention to those many 1-star reviews from literalists who have yet to learn to read between the lines of scripture. We all have a patient Teacher.

An Unforgettable Close Encounter
Rabbi Jesus, a narrative that author Bruce Chilton calls, "an intimate biography" is all that and more. It is a bold and illuminating work that takes the reader on an eye-opening and startling journey with Yeshua throughout his 30 some years. Other authors have attempted to do similar thing, but as an author and Messianic Jewish evangelist, I can tell you that Chilton engages his subject with a vibrancy and candor that is the equivalent of standing under a cold shower. His revelations are just that, and the thoughtful reader will be not be disappointed. In short, if you want to meet the real Messiah and experience the dynamics that drove this man, then Rabbi Jesus is must reading. Among the many books on Jesus, this is one that will raise eyebrows, quicken hearts and yes, make your skin tingle. Be there with Jesus in the first century. Get on board for the trip of a lifetime!

valuable insgiht
I appreciate the author's contribution to the information available about Jesus' life and ministry. I appreciate this book for its candid approach to faith matters. The information given does not in any way "threaten" my beliefs; in fact, I am strengthed in my understanding of the Christ as I learn more about the life and times of Jesus. I have often experienced a sense that the scriptures are a "Cliff Notes" version of the immensity of information we do not know or understand. For me "faith" is a walk not a talk or head storage/retrieval system. To become more knowledagable about 'the man' I am able to become more aware and confirmed in my walk about the source of Creation and Transformation. I am intrigued by the author's discussion of Quantum Physics; the notes which accompany the text are themelves value resources for further study and consideration.

The Judaism of Jesus
This has been for me one of the most spiritually restorative books I have ever read. I can believe in and trust this depiction of Jesus, and love him more than ever. I want my Jewish friends to read it, too. Thank you, Dr. Chilton; my gift to you is a recommendation: I think you would very much appreciate Amos Oz’s last novel, “Judas.”

A work of fiction!
Real bible readers will see this for what it is...opinionated speculation and nothing but to make Jesus a mere human being who was born to Mary, a promiscuous 13 year old who conceived Jesus, not from God or Joseph, but from a possible rape?!! Seriously? I don't care what other scholarly historians may have written, God's word is inerrant! Reader beware, know your bible before reading this trash!

Good book! Intelligent inferences that logically fill in some gaps on the life of Jesus.
It is an interesting review of the Life of Jesus with insights that are Not usually articulated. for instance, it is pointed out that there is another town by the name of Bethlehem that is within 10 or 20 miles of Nazareth. This town may have been more convenient to fulfill the census, and for the birth of Christ, then the other Bethlehem which would have involved a journey of 100 miles or so Pregnant, and on a donkey. There are a number of clear, cogent inferences, which are proposed to fill in some gaps of Jesus life. The book, could be, classified as fiction. I would prefer to see it, though, as a book of reasonable inferences authored by a scholarly theologian.Andrew Patterson

Well Researched and Written
As a practicing "Catholic", I find Bruce Chilton's highly readable and well researched. His contextualization of Yeshua's life as a rabbi seems so much more real than what the modern "church" presents.I was first introduced by Dr. Chilton's biography of Mary Magdalene which brought her life into a seemly honest perspective. I'm planning to read "Rabbi Paul" next.

Different from the establishment
Chilton tells a very different story than that portrayed by the Christian establishment. You will want to clear your mind before reading this book. But if you can do that, it is an inspiring story of. I can see why the book cover reads "The Jewish Life and Teaching That Inspired Christianity" with the operative word being "inspired" as opposed to "was the foundation of". Loved reading this very different story than what I was brought up with.

'Christianity' as it really was.
If you wish to read an historical analysis of a fascinating character from history that strips away the fanatsy and myth that has mired the Christian Church in doctrinal conflict and wars for centuries, this is the book.If you want your faith tested and energised, this is also the book for you. You will have to re-examine much of what you have learned as orthodox Christianity but it is worth the challenge if you can cope.It is well researched and there is adequate supporting evidence for what is suggested. Yet it is written in an attractive novel style which makes a refreshing change from academic treatises. The scenic descriptions of what it must have been like in first century Palestine are realistic and enhance the story. Similarly the analysis of th epolitical intrigues at play are cleverly explained.

Well written and compelling reading.
Probably the best book I have read on the subject of the Jewishness of Jesus and the continued influence that it has on Christianity today, if the reader has a sufficiently open mind.

speculative
Excellent condition of the book sent. I am very ambivalent about the content of the book, which is highly speculative, and would not therefore recommend its veru useful deep scholarship without caveats.
