(Mood contagion, basically). I was not aware that crystals could be grouped by lattice pattern. Orthorhombic is a diamond-shaped pattern, for instance. The concept of piezoelectricity is fascinating. Tetrahedron aka pyramid shape - there's one for trivia night. This book is packed with information and insight. The 'One Stone - Many Names' section will save you money, as will the sections on which crystals will dissolve in water or bleach in the sun. (I haaate going to stores and seeing amethyst and rose quartz in direct sunlight, while their price tag endures unchanged). Being a book nerd with an extensive library, I would say buy a kindle and paper copy of this book with the money that you save, but that's just me. Anyway, to sum it up, this is an ideal beginner's book. It reads very much like my favorite cookbooks where it is both a pleasure to read and a trusted resource.
