Can I use this without the Lansky Controlled Angle Systems?

You should strop at the same angle you sharpened your blade so that you polish the entire bevel. This is THE MOST missed step. A jewelers rouge, white, red or green should be applied prior to leather stropping. I use white for all mine. The "type" of leather should be vegatable tanned unless you brain tan your own. Chrome tan and latigo would be poor choices as chrome tan contains salts and latigo is more fatty . I have made my own strop from plywood and gluing a pice of scrap leather left over from a gunbelt I made but the angles are freehanded. This along with some jewelers rouge would be an excellent addition to your kit

Ya I would use a real strop or a belt! I've heard you could use a belt to strop but I think buying a real strop would work better!

Can you remove a polishing compound and add another to the same strop?

You could do that, but why not just use the green polishing compound advertised on this page. The green compound may be used on all leather strops to put the final mirror like cut on the knife. To strop a knife is great if you want that super sharp knife, but most blades will dull easily when you strop. I don’t recommend this for most knifes. Most knives less is better at holding a edge, and really just depends how the knife will be used.

Header says “leather stropping polishing hone.” description says it’s “synthetic.” real leather or not?

Mine "appears" to be real leather. It's 1/2'W x 4'L. It has a paper thin "finished" surface atop about 1/8' total leather. If this will be used for knives, I would suggest spending a few more bucks and buying a larger leather strop, on a board, and save yourself a lot of frustration. Amazon has a wide selection of sizes and leather finish options. Good luck!!

From Sharp to Shave Sharp

Worked just like I wanted. I love the Lansky system and can always get my knives very sharp. With the white stone they are very sharp, but not like after I used the stropping hone. Really does make a difference I can see and feel. During use with the stropping hone I can see the blade changing to a mirrored finish. I just sharpened 7 knives this weekend and all of them shave hair easily when put to the test. Don't pay attention to people complaining about the size - it's the same size as other Lansky hones. Clearly those reviewers just think it's a strop and have no idea what the Lansky system is. Also, be careful to go the other way than the stone hones. ONLY USE GOING AWAY FROM THE BLADE. The product is exactly what I wanted and took my sharpening with the Lansky system to the next level.

After using the final step in the Lansky sharpening system, the extra fine stone (1000 grit) I loaded up this strop with Woodstock D2902 Extra Fine Buffing Compound, 1-Pound (Green) and the results were spectacular! Not only did I get a nice mirror edge but it made my old Swiss Army knife hair popping sharp! Highly recommend!
