This is THE MOST missed step. A jewelers rouge, white, red or green should be applied prior to leather stropping. I use white for all mine. The "type" of leather should be vegatable tanned unless you brain tan your own. Chrome tan and latigo would be poor choices as chrome tan contains salts and latigo is more fatty . I have made my own strop from plywood and gluing a pice of scrap leather left over from a gunbelt I made but the angles are freehanded. This along with some jewelers rouge would be an excellent addition to your kit **Q: Just use a belt?** A: Ya I would use a real strop or a belt! I've heard you could use a belt to strop but I think buying a real strop would work better! **Q: Can you remove a polishing compound and add another to the same strop?** A: You could do that, but why not just use the green polishing compound advertised on this page. The green compound may be used on all leather strops to put the final mirror like cut on the knife. To strop a knife is great if you want that super sharp knife, but most blades will dull easily when you strop. I don’t recommend this for most knifes. Most knives less is better at holding a edge, and really just depends how the knife will be used. **Q: Header says “leather stropping polishing hone.” description says it’s “synthetic.” real leather or not?** A: Mine "appears" to be real leather. It's 1/2'W x 4'L. It has a paper thin "finished" surface atop about 1/8' total leather. If this will be used for knives, I would suggest spending a few more bucks and buying a larger leather strop, on a board, and save yourself a lot of frustration. Amazon has a wide selection of sizes and leather finish options.
