Great foundation for a quality stereo system
I wanted a simple integrated amp to use for my "second" audio/TV setup. I don't need an AVR or high-powered unit, but I am picky about audio quality. I love this amp. I have it hooked up to very good ELAC speakers and a subwoofer and I can't find anything I don't like about it. The sound quality is great and there is plenty of power for listening to any sort of music, especially music with lots of dynamic transients. Percussion, vocals, classical, and well-recorded rock all sound great. It seems all the effort went in to creating a simple, high quality component rather than one with bells and whistles. I often use it on the "direct" mode because it is very well balanced overall and rarely needs tweaking with the tone controls. I don't feel that it needs more power. I've done switched A/B testing with other audiophile amps and this really holds its own. The phono section is also very good so if you are into vinyl, this has you covered. This will beat any turntable with a built-in phono preamp, which will also save you some money of a simpler turntable. Spend the money on a good phono cartridge instead. This also have great features such as a preamp/line out for adding more power later and a line subwoofer out. If you just want simple, good clean stereo at a great value, this is your best bet and has everything you need. You will have to spend a lot of money to get noticeably better. This is great for a medium and maybe even a larger sized room with bookshelf/subwoofer or smaller tower speakers in a 2.1 arrangement for great, enjoyable stereo sound. Add a simple quality Bluetooth streamer to one of the inputs and you also have a great streaming system.

Amazing sound
I bought this amplifier to compliment a tube amp setup I own. That way I could do A/B comparisons, through a speaker/amp selector switch. I turn it on and play some quality recordings through it and the sound is amazing and more powerful than ever need. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the mid ranges and low mid ranges have improved in my system with this amp. My Klipsch have never sounded this good during the 30 plus years I’ve owned them. Of course , I recapped them and added the newer tweeters. I highly recommend this amp. It is way above its league at this price point and it looks great also.

Excellent Performance and a Wide Range of Inputs
I have previously reviewed this product, but did not mention at that time that the Onkyo provides inputs for both analog and optical (digital) sources. The latter is especially useful if your TV has an optical audio output; the sound quality from the Onkyo is bound to be superior to what comes with your flat screen.

best choice under 500 bucks, except for one thing.
so I hate to leave a negative review and because of that I won't.I will simply say that this is probably the best integrated amplifier option under $500, better than the Yamaha or similar.it just has such a wonderful rich resolving tone that really draws you into the music and makes you forget about critiquing the sound of what you're listening to and allows you to just enjoy the music.it's got a great turntable input as well as good build quality except,I've went through two of them that have had various issues with the speaker balance being off and one channel sounding louder than the other.I'm a pretty seasoned hi-fi enthusiast so I'm familiar with all the steps needed to correct such a situation or that could cause such a situation to happen. And trust me when I say that none of those steps reached a satisfactory resolution because at the end of the day there was something wrong with both of the amplifiers i purchased.I ended up getting a third one that was perfect and have been enjoying it in my bedroom system that I have where I use it.so don't take my experience in a negative light and not buy it, because you'll be missing out. just hope that when you hit the buy button that you receive a good one. because if you do you're going to get a fantastic beautiful product that makes truly excellent music.

For the money, one of the best.
My system consists of the Elac 6.2's, an 8 inch subwoofer from Dayton Audio, the Audio Technica AT LP 120 w/usb, and this integrated amp. I wanted the amp to match the system, not high end, not low end. Mid end. My choice came to to this amp and the Yamaha AS 301. I chose this amp because of the price and the reputation of Onkyo. The online reviews were very good. I've had it about three months now, so here's my report. It has a very good phono input, not up there with the Schitt Mani, but good. It has four line inputs, more than adequate. It has a subwoofer, or LFE, output, which is critical for today's systems. It has a very nice feature, called Pure Direct, which bypasses the tone controls (including subwoofer) and let's you listen 'straight from the source'. Good for the purists. But it also has phase matching bass, which brings out the lows very nicely, especially if you have a subwoofer. You like funk and hip hop, this will make you happy. It has all controls and a VERY LARGE volume knob on the front, you can't miss it. It is rated at 50 WPC, more than adequate for most people. One thing I love : the amplifer is very quiet, with the volume knob turned to the 2 o'clock position and no source running thru it, you hear -- nothing. No hum. No fuzz. No static. NOTHING. To me, that's the sign of a quality amp. This amp reproduces all of my music well and faithfully. Why not five stars? Well, there's one thing about it that bugs the hell out of me : IT IS TOTALLY BLACK. The case is black, the front is black, and all the controls are black. Sitting in your listening chair, you can't tell where the hell you are with the volume knob (I finally painted a white dot on it), the tone knob, or the balance knob. You have to have a little flashlight near the unit to see where is pointed to what. ONKYO PLEASE TAKE NOTE. Oh yes, there is a remote control and it works great, no complaints there. So, if you are looking for a very good integrated amplifier for a very good price, I strongly recommend this splendid unit. Just put it in a well lighted room or keep your flashlight handy!
