Does exactly what it's supposed to
I wound up with bad ground loop noise when I set up my JBL 305p Active Studio Monitors in my Home Theater and PC Gaming room. Tried using ground loop isolators, ground lifts you name it and still had bad noise coming out the monitors.Wound up deciding to grab this and 2 in 1 out Optical / SPDIF splitter and see if switching to an optical signal would remove the noise. It worked perfectly and the biggest bonus was that I can still control the volume of the system by using the remote that comes with the DAC.If you have a similar set up with issues like mine, try this out.Update to review 1/7/2021:Wound up losing some satisfaction with this product due to audio quality and the volume control system being pretty subpar. It worked great for a $20 DAC and proved out my theory about the ground loop in my set up. However, the volume controller was hit or miss with working and the actual volume increments were not good. You could change from SUPER LOUD to barely too quiet, but with no in between. Also noticed some buzzing and hissing in the background as well.I wound up replacing this with an SMSL Sanskrit MKII and it was a huge improvement over this DAC. Volume control is much better (can make tons of tiny adjustments) and even the remote is a much higher quality. The Audio quality is also substantially better and the hissing / buzzing is gone now.

Works well and has a remote
Easy to set up. Remote works fine but you do need to be directly in front of the unit for the IR to pick it up.No complaints , have had it only for a day. Fast shipping. Have it connected to a Samsung 24" TV with optical audio out going to powered speakers through the aux. Good price.Probably the biggest CON is that the volume level adjustment on the remote is not linear, it jumps from soft to loud, can't get it in between. If they could fix that they would have a 5 star product.

Just what I needed!
I recently got a big TV for my basement gaming room. It's a Samsung 65" QLED (2018 model) and it doesn't have analog audio outputs, only optical digital output. I had a pair of powered studio monitor speakers and a pair of powered subwoofers that I wanted to use with the TV. I had purchased a cheap, basic optical to analog DAC a few years ago. It worked, but without volume control the speakers always ran at full volume. When using my gaming PC as the source, I could control the PC volume, but when using game consoles there was no easy way to control the volume without adjusting all four powered speakers separately.I bought this because it has a remote control for volume and I'm happy to report that it works great for my use case. I swapped out my old DAC for this one and I can control the volume finally. I agree with some other reviews that the volume control could have more discrete levels, but it's reasonable enough as I really just wanted the ability to not run the speakers at max volume. I mainly use the PC so I can fine-tune the volume with that, but now I can play consoles without the entire house shaking.Audio quality seems to be quite good. I had some weird buzzing with my old DAC that I'm not seeing as bad on this one.

Aux output is not for headphones
Yes you can plug some headphones in the AUX output. It is not designed for that (which is why it labelled AUX and not HEADPHONE). Easy to drive headphones like those that come with a smart phone may work fine. Larger headphones or harder to drive ones will not. But other than that, the descriptions is pretty accurate. The stepped volume, as many have noted, is too coarse for some systems. The steps are so big it may jump from too quiet to too loud in one step. But if you can adjust the gain somewhere else in your system (like the amp or speakers you connect may have a volume control that lets you adjust the overall level to something that works) you are likely to be okay. So, for thirty bucks you get a DAC with a remote control and variable level output, which sounds fine. So that's not all bad!

Mine had overwhelming static noise when using SPDIF
When powering on the device with all the cables plugged in (such as if you turned it off and then back on), the output had static/noise that overwhelmed the signal. This is consistent with the symptoms of a DAC that has lost clock sync. You can re-establish clock sync by unplugging the cable, holding it for several seconds, then plugging it back in again, which re-negotiates the data layer. Some DACs (but perhaps not at this price point) usually have strategies for recovering from clock desync.I tested the device with several different sources (computer, tv, cable box) and several different USB power sources (just in case there was an electrical leak to the output channels), and I made sure to follow the directions and limitations described on the product page (like pcm)Since my use case was to use this device to provide a volume control for a cable box's S/PDIF, this is kind of a fatal flaw, since having to unplug and replug the toslink cable each time would defeat the purpose.Disclaimer -- I did not test the coax digital input, only the spdif. I did not have any coax digital sources handy. But since i suspect this is a DAC issue, I wouldn't expect that to make a difference.

Awesome Product
I've been shopping for an affordable sound bar on the account that my kids are sick and tired of being my remote control. I previously equipped my old Bose Wave with a bluetooth adapter and so in thought of searching for a device that will give my wired speakers a wireless remote - eureka! This works great and was so simple to install. The only thing isc that it did not come with the power supply. I used an old phone charger that met the input/output requirement and so far so good. I am however sending the company a request to give me the adapter or an ok that it's fine to use this aftermarket power supply.
