This book is great! If you aren't doing archaeology on how people did ballistics when they only had deerskins and stone knives, skip to the part with the four-DOF and six-DOF descriptions. You will be sinking people's battleships in no time at all.

This is an outstanding text, and this 2nd Edition DOES incorporate the errata list corrections. Still no index, though. If you like ballistics and love fairly advanced math, this is your book! If you love ballistics and either don't mind advanced math or can follow along even without thoroughly understanding every mathematical step, I think you'll still love this book. If you're more interested in practical applications of the underlying math, probably look elsewhere.Litz's book is pretty good for practical application, but this book is the math underlying everything Litz talks about. Choose what you like, but this one's worth it if you're at all interested in the math behind a projectile's flight.

This is the bible for understanding ballistics. The history of ballistics provided by the author is well written and interesting. Good math doesn't really get dated as some reviews suggested. The math is more like advanced high school level than college level. This second edition corrected all the typos of the first edition. If you are not good with math and you don't need this depth of understanding, there are likely better books for you. However, fully understanding and properly applying ballistics math is the only way to accurately determine the ballistics of any given projectile...I used this book to build two ballistic calculators that enable accurate extremely long range (+1000 yards) shooting. One calculator allows you to accurately determine the bullet ballistic coefficient by measuring bullet speed at two ranges. Having an accurate bullet ballistic coefficient is the first step and is critical for achieving extremely long range accuracy. The other calculator allows you to determine ballistics parameters such as bullet speed, bullet energy, bullet elevation, bullet windage, and bullet time of flight at any desired range. Either the Army Metro or ICAO Atmosphere Standard may be associated with the bullet ballistic coefficient. Several bullet coefficient of drag standards (i.e., G1, G2, G5, G6, G7, G8, GS, RA4, GL or GI) may be associated with the bullet ballistic coefficient. The effects of altitude, temperature, relative humidity, wind, terrain slope, rotating earth and bullet gyroscopic spin drift on the ballistic parameters may be accounted for as desired. Maximum gun range based on minimum bullet speed, minimum bullet energy, maximum bullet time of flight, or maximum point blank range may be determined. Bullet stability factor may be determined for any bullet shape, muzzle velocity and gun barrel rifling twist rate. Laser bore sight parameters may be determined to quickly and conveniently zero a gun at any desired range using a laser bore sight. Bullet initial intercept range may be determined to allow setting up a short range target to confirm sight/optics adjustment and gun zero range. These ballistics calculators use a fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithm and a 0.0001 second time step increment to solve the non-linear differential equations that govern the point-mass dynamics of symmetric projectiles. As such, there isn’t a more accurate ballistics calculator available at any price. Definitive source for exterior ballistics! If you are interested in writing code for Siacci, Point Mass or 6 DF this book has all the detail you will need. The author details all sources and provides excellent history and methods of ballistics testing as well a great spark photography reprints. A familiarity with ordinary differential equations is helpful to get the most out of this book. Material is presented in a logical consistent format beginning with vacuum trajectory and concluding with 6 DF. Plenty of detailed example calculations.

The book provides excellent material for serious sport shooters with advanced knowledge on math and physics. It may fall short for the people that wishes to go very deep in the subject but I don't believe is the main scope of this book. Regarding the word Modern, yes is not modern but it refers to the context of when ballistics changes and I believe is not referred to the "latest" or "state of the art" in ballistics. Allow me an example, "Modern Physics" books normally refers to the physics that changes from the classical physics rather than present or current state of physics, so in this case I believe the modernity has to be taken in a similar sense.This edition has incorporated the corrections which makes it very easy to follow. It is not meant for people that wand to learn basic ballistic, is quite interesting if you want to write your own software for calculations that are not easily found at ballistic programs on the web. Also quite useful for someone that want to go deeper on the subject and have or can get the background in math and physics that is needed.

I do not understand all the math but I can follow along with the story.

Still to this day, it is one of my favorite books! Always refreshing to go back and read it again

This is clearly the best book on the topic. If you have a good understanding of engineering mathematics, buy it you won't regret it

Testo fondamentale ma di difficile lettura per chi non abbia una cultura universitaria, dato che utilizza con grande scioltezza i concetti della balistica teorica mediante abbondante utilizzo di matematica di livello non elementare.Il testo è anche datato e questo si osserva nella forma grafica, tuttavia la fisica non cambio e quindi lo consiglio a chi voglia approfondire oppure sia stufo di leggere libri banali e cerchi finalmente un testo degno della bellezza della balistica scientifica.
