If using old style DC adjustable throttle you need to install “blocks” . If running newer direct command controls, the hand throttle and chips in the locomotive control the locomotive with the track maintaining a steady voltage. This works much better but is more expensive. You should be able to find information on line . Search Model train DCC

If you have a set with a digtal command controller do you need a regular bachmann power pack to control the switch?

NO. I have set up a series of toggle switches drawing power from a used computer power supply. That takes care of ALL my town lights, train yard lights, SWITCHES and building lights. a valuable source of information is Youtube. good luck and Bauchmann is not the only way to go
