Flower Origami: Fabric Flowers from Simple Shapes

Flower Origami
Interesting book to have fun with. I personaly did not like the small diagrams to make each flower. It could have been much much larger. Second must confusing thing was the photo of the flower on the left page showing a completed project but the right page was something different. There is also a mistake that talks about a direction on two circle sizes located in the back of the book that is not correct. One says to use the smaller circle and it's incorrect. It is another circle pattern that is actually larger. Make sure you view the circles before you make the flower. The instructions are incorrect when choosing a circle. One is marked X and the other XX. The instructions say otherwise. The product does turn out very nice in the long run. I found if you do not sew the circle exactly the size it calls for, you flower will be lobbsided.

What fun!
Kumiko Sudo's books are of consistent high quality; this one is a real gem in my library. Each page is a delight to the eye and filled with imaginative flower designs just begging to be made. Individual projects are small; directions are expressed clearly and the diagrams are perfect. The last section of the book includes template designs according to project. The Flower Origami Templates (basic shapes) are well worth the investment. Though this craft is not for everyone, everyone can enjoy the artistry of folded fabric! Buy this book and you're well on your way to a satisfying and fun challenge.

So creative & beautiful!
I immediately loved this book. Kumiko's choices of fabrics made every photograph a piece of eye candy, Initially, I struggled with a few of the flowers as I interpreted the directions slightly differently than they were written but once I started folding more of the designs, I caught on to the general repetition of steps. After 3 or 4 flowers, it wasn't difficult at all. I highly recommend this book.

Interesting - But Haven't Tried Yet
I haven't made anything yet from this book but have enjoyed reviewing the projects. Not sure yet how I will approach using these designs.

Just what I wanted.
I was taught origami many years ago by my lovely Japanese neighbour. Recently I had the idea of trying to combine origami with my love of sewing when trying to find some small, quick projects to make. I struggled, failed and gave up! Then I found this book.I had little idea of what was in the book when I ordered it but was pleasantly surprised by the number of the origami "flowers" that I liked and the projects included. I particularly like the little baskets. I have put "flowers" in inverted commas as "embellishments" would be a more appropriate word. Most are attractive and decorative and would enhance a bag or a garment. Fabric obviously will curve into petal shapes a lot better than paper but few resemble actual flowers. This is not a problem for me but the title of the book might result in disappointment for some purchasers. The instructions are very clear although I'm sure a knowledge of paper folding helps greatly. The written instructions have well labelled drawings illustrating each step. The ones I have tried have worked well. The inclusion of templates for leaves and stems is helpful as are suggestions for background squares to display the flowers, some with sashiko stitching designs given.

Fresh fun and simple to do.
This book comprises 20 designs for decorative flowers - all inspired by the art of origami (bit obvious!) what's not obvious is how lovely the finished items are. I can't say the flowers look like their namesakes, but that's not a problem as they do all end up looking beautiful, and you can make your own mind up what the flower is. The book has intructions for using the flowers to make a tote bag, clutch purse, cushions, wall hangings, hat decoration, cell phone cover -napkin rings, scarf clasp etc - all instructions are clear and comprehensive with templates at the back of the book. If you want to try something a little different - this would be good. The author uses silk from kimono's and sometimes only very small pieces are needed so this is a good book for using up scraps of oriental fabrics you may have in your craft box.
