I Can Read Music, Vol 2: A note reading book for CELLO students

2nd in series, we have used both
This book is the 2nd in the series. My 11 year old suzuki cellist who has been playing for 4 years has started it. His teacher uses these books, which are apparently pretty standard in the suzuki world. The book is fine. The 1st in the series was a page of rhythm and a page of notes per lesson. THis book seems to combine them more and has duets. The lessons are more challenging than the first book. I will say that this book drills the important aspects of rhythm and pitch. It is not exactly exciting. Just like math fact practice, its not fun, but you have to do it to learn in the long run.

Beginner music reader and player
I am a beginner music reader and player. I started playing the cello this year with no previous music reading background so I need clear directions and information in order to progress. This book makes it seem as though it will give a person directions but it does not. A page may have a single sentence of explanation and then 2-3 pages of just notes for playing. I wish there was more information presented for more understanding. Also, there is no way to check if you are doing it right. The book is titled I can Read Music but no I still can not read music. You aren't playing songs either, it will just be practice scales and practice rhythms, some may sound better than others. I hate having spent money on a book but still have to use other resources to really know how to read music therefore only 3 stars.

After ordering this fine book, along with its Volume 1
After ordering this fine book, along with its Volume 1, I shared it with my cello teacher and told her that both Volumes I and II were helping me in my between-lesson practice sessions. She told me a month later that she had started using them with some of her other students. I continue to use these two volumes intermittently in my daily practice along with the new pieces I'm working on. I'm a beginning late-starter cello student at age 70.

Love that there aren't finger numbers in this book and ...
My son is starting book 3 cello, and is 9 years old. This is a fabulous fit right now for his note reading practice. Love that there aren't finger numbers in this book and that it is built as duets.

Great sight reading book for intermediate student.
My daughter is enjoying these sight reading exercises. They are pretty little melodies and rhythms. The challenge is increased slowly so she learns without frustration!
