Great reeds!
I have tried nearly every reed on the market in my twenty year career as a saxophonist, but I always return to my the Plasticovers. I have always found cane reeds to have a stuffy sound and less than desirable responsiveness, and I can't seem to get into the hype of synthetics. These are without a doubt the best reeds I have ever used. My current setup consists of a Yamaha YAS-875EXB with a Beechler Bellite #8 using the stock ligature and size 2.5 Plasticovers, and I absolutely love the bright pop sound that I achieve with this setup. I appreciate that there is little to no break-in time for these reeds and that changes in temperature and climate do not appear to affect them in any way. One thing I will say is that these reeds tend to sound better on metal mouthpieces. I have tried to use them with a Jody Jazz Jet 7, but there's a noticeable "plastic" sound. All in all, these are great reeds and I would most definitely recommend that someone at least give them a try.

A Great Alternative Synthetic Reed !
I wonder why no one has written about these reeds? They are a great idea that ACTUALLY works well! There are plenty of synthetic reeds to choose from. I tried the highly praised Legere Signature Reed. It was expensive but supposed to last. Mine lasted only one time. After two hours it was torn or more like a crack, on the edge. I was very careful with it but it was not usable again. I'm pretty sure it was a fluke but I couldn't afford to order another $32 reed. I looked around for competing synthetic reeds but ordered more regular Rico reeds. They are high quality standard reeds. So I thought to check there product line and they do have this unique reed that's both natural and synthetic. It's a real reed covered in a plastic coating, except the back part of the top where it is labeled. It works great! It's name says it all - Plasticover Reeds! My first one lasted 3 WEEKS! It would have lasted longer but caught the edge putting on the ligature. It didn't tear, but it bent it. I'm on the 3rd week on my second Plasticover reed and Ipracticing two hours a day - every day! These D'Addario Woodwinds Rico Plasticover are a pleasure to play! I've been working on getting different textures to the sound and this reed works well with the various pressures I've tried! You do NOT need to soak them, but make sure you rinse them off after using them and still handle with care (that is perfect for me!). They come in the standard sizes from 1.5 to 4, in half steps. I thought they would feel a little thicker then the other regular reeds of the same size, but they don't! The other choice you have is to buy a box of 5 or 25. Choose either one because each one lasts a long time! They are a little more expensive then the corresponding regular reeds, but very a great value when you can use they same one for weeks at a time! The feel for the reed is normal, the plastic coating is smooth and again, lasts a long time!

Just the thing for lazy people.
They sound fine, seem no different than a wet, uncoated reed, and you don't have to mess with water. I take my sax apart to clean it but keep using the same reed. It works fine. I use it for practice so haven't done a careful comparison of the sound. It seems to last a long time, though. I've been using the first one I put on for a couple of weeks. Next, some Plasticover clarinet reeds.

Good reeds but not perfect.
Not suitable for any mouthpiece. Gives a very bright sound. Even too bright sometimes. The reed is better preserved over time. Easy to play.. (At the end everyone returns to java)

Lasts a Little Longer
My daughter just started lessons this fall. Beginners go through a lot of reeds. The reeds seem to be almost as expensive as the cost of renting the instrument. These reeds do seem to give her a better sound, and they last for more practices than the ones without "Plasticover". I will not buy the other type anymore.

Rico plasticover alto sax reeds 2.0
Love these plasticover alto sax reeds. I have these reeds for both my Alto and Soprano sax. You have to use the reeds for a little while until they break in properly and then you can notice the smooth tone especially if you have a good quality mouth piece.

Enjoying the sound so far
Sound for the money is pretty good. There is just a slightly higher tone. I am pretty new to the game but that's what it sounds like to me. Would buy again, when the 5 pack is done.

Of the box of 5, two of the reeds had deformities that rendered them unplayable. The rest are OK but most started to warp after a few days of playing.

After few hours of playing it chipped. The sound is not vibrant as normal Rico reeds.

Klare Kaufempfehlung!
