Learning German Through Storytelling: Genowrin - an interactive adventure for German learners (Aschkalon) (German Edition)

Engaging and extremely useful way of learning German - highly recommended (don't be put off by the fantasy theme)!
These books are really a great way to improve your German and stay interested while you learn. I was a bit skeptical about the Genowrin books at first since I'm not much of a fantasy fan, but they're really well-written and engaging stories. My only (v. minor) criticism would be that if you lose one of the little fights you have (Grammar tests) you go back to the very beginning of the book. Now you can just flick back a page to avoid this, but maybe going back to the equivalent of a 'save point' (i.e. earlier in the book but not the very start) would be better - that way you would re-read material without being motivated to cheat! In any case I highly recommend these books to anyone learning German.

Creative and fun
The story and illustrations are creative and fun......I find I can follow the story and expand my vocabulary. Not a substitute for a language class, but very good for someone like myself who has some working German and needs to practice reading in German.I like the ways you can customize the story by choosing different paths...that is fun.

Fun. Light-Hearted. Intriguing. But not for beginners
Having read the Cafe in Berlin series before reading this short narrative, I had to take a star away from this series. Though this series is rather great for providing a hook to keep one interested in the book, the quality is lesser than the Cafe in Berlin stories as the André Klein had not yet adapted a user friendly way of giving translation for things in this novella thus making it not really suitable to beginners. In addition to this it does not provide really any insight to the german culture which many people beginning to learn german would probably appreciate to satiate their curosity. The interactive story mechanic is rather compelling and play out initially like one would expect from an interactive story, however, there are not many branching paths available which becomes an issue in the second book in the series. Which is understandable as a series with branching paths would prove to be rather difficult for subsequent books. That being said the narrative is rather enjoyable in the first book.In contrast to the Cafe in Berlin stories, this series is rather longer and thus will provide more learning opportunities and more rereadability, but it also is wide enough to actually look good on a bookshelf for people who enjoy physical copies of books

Good way to learn to read German
I am about halfway thru the text and the story is fun to read on a kindle. It kept me entertained while waiting for my car to be serviced, waiting to have my teeth cleaned and a few other mundane wait sessions. Its a good way to stay engaged in learning a language.

Loved it
What a fun and interactive way to practice a new language. Klein has really built on his tort books to provide readers with even more fun here. Plus it's a fantasy setting, so double win. Loved it and can't wait for the sequel.

I liked the story the only problem was that it was too short.

A little disappointing
After having read other books by Andre Klein, Mord am Morgen, Spielers Tod etc, I was rather disappointed. I would have preferred to read a story without the interaction...I felt like I was going round in circles sometimes. For me a continuous story broken down into small chapters would have been better. But that's probably just my personal preference.Having said that this is a book to help people learn German and the genre in which it is written, was to some extent, a good introduction into this genre in German. Personally I would have enjoyed it more without the interaction.

Fun learning aid
I'm trying to relearn German after not having used it for millions of years (and so forgotten most of it) so anything that brings a bit of fun into the process gets my approval. So a not-too-hard interactive adventure story was a very attractive idea. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because with a lot of the multi-choice options is was obvious which options to avoid without understanding them - eg 2 options go to the same place so the 3rd, unique, one was likely to be correct.

Fantastic!
Great for german learners who already know a little. Immersive story. Much more enjoyable than a parralel text. Wish i could find stuff of this quality for learning spanish too! Please make more!!

Learning through stories.
Reasonaby good method of learning though for current German, "Umgangsprache" not quite adequate. However the sory is interesting if a trifle rambling.
